Do I need SSB in a CB?

I have recently been looking into getting a CB and have looked at the Uniden Bearcat 880 and the Bearcat 980SSB. It looks like its pretty much the same thing, just a few variations, mainly the 980 being SSB. Do I NEED SSB? What is the difference and why would it be better/worse to get SSB?

Full Spool 12-07-2012 08:49 PM

Without going into specifics, get the ssb.

the Kolector 12-07-2012 09:04 PM

I have been doing more research and alot of folks talk about modding their CB, is that necessary for occasional use?

A higher output chip?
Some cb shops are crooks, they will adjust your varistor for more gain, while saying they installed a chip.

CBs work just fine out of the box.

If you just want it for trail use, any stock CB will serve you well. If you want to talk to truckers 500 miles away, you'll need some (most likely illegal) mods.

the Kolector 12-07-2012 10:16 PM

Would just be the occasional use on trails if/when I get the chance to actually go out wheeling. I still can't make up my mind between the Uniden Bearcat 880 and 980. It doesn't really seem the 980 is worth the upgrade.

This will be my next jeep radio

You do not need SSB then. SSB is for longer distance communication off the typical 40 channels you see. Jeepers don't use SSB, just long haul truckers or home base-station guys. I am getting rid of my Cobra 29LX for a 959 with SSB because I am on the highway often and CB radio is a recent hobby that has piqued my interest.

http://www.cbradiomagazine.com/index.html is a great resource for CB info.

I have a Uniden 510. It's a basic model but works just fine for trail rides at about a third the cost of that Bearcat. One thing I may change is to add an external speaker. Mine has speaker on the bottom and I currently have it mounted on top of the dash. They are all restricted to the same power so it's really all about features.

My daughter uses a Midland portable unit and we communicate just fine on the trails.

SSB will be nice when the zombie apocalypse happens. the radio channels will be clogged with the simple 40 channel am folks, and me and my posse can go to the lower side band where people won't be.

lolpetewtf 12-08-2012 05:33 PM

Having my pants down might be the best scenario :thumb::rofl:

Go out with a bang, eh? Lol

If you want to talk distance, go get your HAM ticket. Modding any FCC approved transciever (radio) is illegal, as well as using inline amplifiers (kickers). Niether of these actions helps you HEAR any better, or does anything to increase the broadcast abilities of others.

SSB is neat if you have other folks with similar equipment, it is like a super cb, but only for those who can get on it.

As far as dodging traffic, just because you are using ~1/2 bandwidth doesn't mean the "others" are. You will still be competing for the same band space. It only becomes a broader spectrum when all users go SSB.

OP, for trail riding, no you do not need ssb. But then again, I don't NEED plenty of the stuff I own...

lolpetewtf 12-08-2012 06:51 PM

Still thinking of that ham ticket BlueRidgeYJ! Would love a small base station.

All I can say is I would do it again in a second, and I am not even that far down the rabbit hole. Fun on a bun.

Pissin up wind is illegal too.

An amp could help if your deep in the woods and need to skip out and emergency call. Or, starting a forest fire would probably bring quicker results.

No, you're free to be as stupid as you please.

Sure, juice it up and hope they hear ya. Good alternative, because they are very similar - you don't know if help is coming or not. How long do you wait to self-rescue?

I find it far easier to carry the right equipment, but hey, I also wear pants in the winter. Do what you choose to.

Guess I pissed ya off when I said you shouldn't mod a radio when you can buy em better. I would've thought we'd agree, since you said they "work fine out of the box".

Oh well, I'll go cry for a bit now. :(

lmao

Since AM uses both sidebands, you're not going to find the lower any clearer.

Pissin' off BRYJ = bad idea!

I don't get pissed off.

You might want to get a hug from your life partner though.

lolpetewtf 12-09-2012 02:27 PM

I'll let you two hash it out :whistling:

I did, though I think I'm just gonna go with my original thought and get the Bearcat 880. I haven't seen, or heard, any good enough things to make it worth the difference at this point.
