2013 Spring Camping/Wheeling Trip

I know a few expressed interest (and gave me emails to shoot you info) But I wanted to make a thread as well. BlueRidgeYJ and his expertise of the mountains and where the good trails are, is helping me set this up.

This is what we have and or asking what people prefer, so we can set it up...

Lake Sherando, which is just SE of Waynesboro slightly west of the Parkway, one of the Shenandoah National Park sites, or a Blue Ridge Pkwy site. All those are public and ranger run, and it would be up to them on the SNP and Pkwy sites. There is also montebello campsite or something @ BR Pkwy & 56 - it is private. The montebello and sherando are more self contained with trails and lakes and such while the others are more of just a campsite. Also around is Misty Mountain Campsite on R250 just off 64 in Crozet. It is private and is jeeper friendly (they have a jeeper campout in sept, btw) and allows groups up to 100. Not quite top of the mountain, still cool place though.

I like Sherando, but bear in mind it is a park so you gotta have a park pass and pay a campsite fee (Same in SNP). We can disperse camp in the woods free, but I think it is a max of 12 people. Plenty of places up and down the ridgeline have ~20 or more campsites, but we would need to make some reservations before all the yankees in maryland do, particularly in SNP, but even in Sherando. They start taking them later this week.

If anyone likes any of these ideas or has any of their own, please let me know!!

Turbostixxx 12-11-2012 12:15 PM

Anyone?

BlueRidgeYJ 12-11-2012 06:28 PM

Me me me! Lol.

Gonna be fun on a bun folks.

Especially when i just changed my jeeps build list to include a 2.5" coil lift instead of a a 2" spacer lift and my 31s to 33s

NinjaJeep06 12-11-2012 07:39 PM

I'm game! As long as I'm free when the dates and times are set. My vote goes to sherando lake, mainly cause I live near it and it's a short drive to Big Levels (I call it Bald Mt :P) from there.

BlueRidgeYJ 12-11-2012 09:29 PM

I think Sherando opens last weekend in March. If we want a group site, we need to call em. If we just want individual or backcountry sites, we will be fine. I may just spend at least 1 day walkin in the woods; that really does it for me. But all them FR round there sure are fun, too.

Thats down off Coal Rd, right?

NinjaJeep06 12-12-2012 11:28 AM

Yea, it's on the coal road.

Turbostixxx 12-12-2012 11:29 AM

I have no clue, my jeep has not touched trails yet

It's a really good introduction trail for ya. It has two main ways up it, the switchbacks and the straight up route. Both are stocker friendly, but the straight up route is a narrow and rough trail (my favorite). If you have a soft top, you are most likely gonna get some scratches on it. On top of the ridge it has some mud holes to go through and there's one deep mud hole that comes up to the bottom of the doors...if it snows this winter that is.

Sounds fun, my soft top windows are already really scratched up, but i am getting a new soft top in feb. But i will keep the rear windows that are on now so i can change them to those before the trail

Like NinjaJeep06 said, straight up the middle is tight, especially with a JK, might have to add limb risers for this run. :D:D

My TJ will travel just fine, i vote for this one as well, and camping as a group

BlueRidgeYJ 12-12-2012 06:33 PM

Also, I am happy to make it as cool or chill as y'all want. We can do steaks, chicken, burgers, dogs, craft beer (4 or 5 local breweries), cider (local), whatever y'all want. I can score some hickory chips or slats (fish), but for a load of people I'm gonna have to know how many and what, and if it is excessive I'll need a little reimbursment, like 5$ a head or whatever it works out to. Or we can byob, or a mix of the 2.

Thoughts?

Turbostixxx 12-13-2012 12:20 AM

Thoughts, we collect $5 a head and just do like a big cookout, whether it be on a grill or fire

Turbostixxx 12-13-2012 09:56 AM

I am getting info today on renting oak ridge

d_rehmann 12-15-2012 08:22 AM

Count me in fellas.

BlueRidgeYJ 12-15-2012 09:19 AM

Sweet.

Since Sherando is getting the nod so far, here is a bit of info.

http://www.recreation.gov/camping/Sh...O&parkId=96721

http://www.fs.usda.gov/wps/portal/fs...reation%20Area

It's 8$ per vehicle, per day. You can cram people in a car, it is a per car fee. Campsites are 20$ per night individual (1 tent), 50$ per night group campsite (up to 75 people). 25$ day use picnic shelter usage fee.

You can get an annual pass to Shenandoah lake, or to all Parks. I don't remember, but it is like 80$ or 100$.

So for about 130$ or so we could get a group site, plenty of food, and the picnic shelter for a day. Then it would be 8$ additional to drive in.

Turbostixxx 12-16-2012 09:52 AM

Its a go for me

Turbostixxx 12-16-2012 09:59 AM

So collect $10 per person/family and its a go!

Turbostixxx 12-16-2012 10:04 AM

After New Years I will reserve the campsite

NinjaJeep06 12-16-2012 10:11 AM

Sounds good. If I'm able to make it I'll bring a few things such as drinks, chips, solo cups and napkins.

JYJeep 12-16-2012 03:13 PM

I haven't seen dates yet but I'm in if I have the weekend off.
Spent a number of weekends wheeling in SoCal with a group of WF jeepers, so I'm looking forward to meeting the east coast clan.

Turbostixxx 12-16-2012 10:34 PM

BR, you know the mountains better, when would be better (a little warmer)

BlueRidgeYJ 12-17-2012 11:21 AM
