steering stablizer questions
 
so i need imput on steering stablizers what is the strongest one out there i have a rancho now it seems weak i have a rough 4inch with 5/8 booms and 33,s and my jeep is all over the road are the rough country 2.2 amy better than the one i have now

You sure its the stablizer? Have you done a shake down of your front end?

Stabilizer is not going to help with that issue. Like banks said check your tierod ends, steering box bolts, toe in, etc.

I bashed a giant hole in my stabilizer 2 months ago and all the fluid leaked out and it drives the exact same. None of my other rigs have had stabilizers either.

Putting a bigger better stabilizer is just like putting a bandaid on a broken arm. Its not going to fix it.

Is your pitnum good and snug on the shaft? When I got my yj there was no response between 10:00 & 2:00 on the steering wheel.Lucky I made it home. Got ready to replace the steering box, only to find it needed 2 washers to snug the pitnum onto the steering shaft.All is good.

Check your alignment, check your ball joints, check your hub bearings, check your tie rod ends, check your spring bushings.

The stabilizer really doesn't do anything as far as steering geometry goes. It's merely there to absorb shock from sudden input. I haven't had an SS on my jeep for 2 years and it drives straight and true with very little slop. Check your crucial components first.

i just did the lift it did not do this problem with the 32 that i drove on for a week i just got the 33 mounted now i have considerable wander i wouldnt think i would need an alignment if i did not break the tie rod loose im going to tighten up my u bolts some more

Yeah same issue here, ball joints, tie rid ends, bearing unit hubs, front axle unjointed, lower steering column bearing. Still washed out or feeling loose. Get an alignment and have the guy inspect all your steering play him a little and tell him you need an estimate. The alignment changes when you lift or add bigger tires.

How much air pressure you running in your tires. Too much and this can cause the issues your describing.

I agree I have been maticulosly dropping 1 pound at a time to find a comfortable street pressure and on that takes the little bit of slop out. Everything is new so it shouldn't feel that way at 50+.

Mine feels that way too but its cause of the wheels. I drop my pressure from 26 to 20 and there was a big difference.

That's always the trade off...

Higher pressure=higher mpg
Lower=better drive quality

Im runing 35 psi stayed at the girlfriends tonight so no Jeep shes st home in the grage ill jackit up tomarrow and check it out if its the ball joints I guess ill get a 1 ton up grade

That's too much pressure drop to 28 and drive it. I'm running heavy 37's (145lbs a corner) with no stabilizer and I got no issues even at 80 mph. Bwt I'm still rockin the Dana 30.

i just got threw jacking it up and there is no play in the ball joints i went a head and tightened up the steering box a lil it was already supper tight but got a half of turn it is a little better now but may be i need an alignment i notised when i was stating my steering wheel it was a lil toed in but may be in tripping

If you over tighten your steering box it will wear out quicker. Told you how to solve the problem. Its your tire pressure. 35 is high for an off road tire. A coworker had the same issue in his TJ his GY Duratrac were at 34 he drop the pressure to 28 problem solved.

I was trying to change out my steering stabilizer today but I cant get the end that attatches to the tie rod out, I got the castle nut off but cant get it to move. Is it threaded into the middle of the tie rod or what? I couldnt get to budge turning the backside with a wrench or beating on it.

I had the same trouble with mine recently. It is not threaded, but tapered. What I did was take a torch and get it nice and warm...and then take a big hammer and beat on it. The key is though, to not hammer on the stud sticking out...but hammer NEXT to the stud. It will eventually pop off (hopefully)!
