Viper security/power locks

Hey folks. I've had my TJ for a while, but I'm new to the online community. I currently live in a somewhat shady area, so I'm thinking about asking for a Viper 350 plus security system for Christmas. While I'm messing around with it I was also thinking about the power lock upgrade since the expandability is there. I have the DIY mindset and I've done all of the audio upgrades myself, so would it be relatively easy to figure out how to tie the locks into the security system? Also, I know I'll need to pick up the actuators separately from the security system, but would I need anything else for this project?

Thanks for reading and happy holidays!

Well first you would have to be sure all that stuff would fit inside the doors. Assuming you have full doors... Also how are you going to get the power there? Are you going to have a permanent wire feeding the switches and actuators or jam tacs so you can remove the doors with out any electrical connections .

Sorry, yes I do have full doors. I've seen actuators that will fit inside of the door panels. I'm planning on just drilling a hole and using a rubber grommet to run the wire through, then just using some disconnects to avoid having to cut into the frame to add contacts.

Take a look at this.

I actually just got done reading your write up doc. That's how I planned on installing the actuators. Did you just order the remote entry kit without the alarm from that site? I was looking at the avital security and remote entry kit that they have for around $150, but Amazon sells the Viper 350 systems for around $50 and I was wondering how hard/expensive it would be to tie outside actuators into this system. Thank you for the replies.

Ok I've just decided on getting the viper keyless entry system with built in relays and tying the door lock actuators into that. I just have one more question about where I can get the power for it though. Would it be possible to splice it off of the 12v power outlet that's next to the cigarette lighter?

when you install that security system you will be splicing into power at your main harness near the steering wheel. Grab the power from there also. I use www.the12volt.com for wire colors and they have great writeups for people who arent that experienced with alarm system installs. The TJ is very easy to work on, the alarm is one of the easier pieces of electronics to add. Proper prep is the key. bench prep the alarm before the install, this means roll up all the wires that you arent using before you start connecting the alarm to your Jeep. When you get your alarm you will see loads of wires, you can reduce this to about 8-10 wires cause most of the wires arent needed for a TJ install. This will keep the work area nice and clean and way less confusing. If you want more help after you get the alarm just post up here.
