2013 King of the Hammers

Dakota and I will be camping Thursday 2/7 and Friday 2/8 in the hills above Hammertown to witness all of the mayhem that is the KOH. Depending on the track this year we will be moving between Chocolate Thunder and Back Door.
Post up if you are interested in joining us.

Hey Grant, I may be interested in coming down to check out the action. I will have to see as it gets closer. I have been watching the progress of the Savvy rig as they are jumping classes after killing the competition in the stock class last year. I don't know the layout or if there are good RV spots. I would definitely like to hook up with you guys if we go...:)

Irongrave 12-15-2012 12:04 PM

I so wish I could go. I'm hoping AtoZ and the current king Eric get their new cars finished for the race.

Jerry Bransford 12-15-2012 12:21 PM

I'll be there, it will be another awesome 3 days in JV!

I wouldn't recommend a RV out there. There is only one way in and one way out once you get off the highway and it is a PITA to go up and down. Our campsite above Hammertown is far away from everyone and the dust (which there is a lot of). By the end of the week, the trucks & Jeeps look like they have been sitting there for ages.

Yep, not sure which check point yet though. Maybe above Back Door again, I dunno yet. I just know I'll bring warmer clothes to the checkpoint this year. I was out there until 11pm waiting for the last competitor to finish so he wouldn't get a DNF... I froze my azz off.

JeepHerz 12-16-2012 01:55 AM

Hey Fred/Grant-
Could you be a little more specific on where you'll be? I get all sorts of craziness when I Google "Back Door" and "Chocolate Thunder....."
Never been but would like to go. Have some people in town for work that week so it might be kind of tough to get away. Will try.
BTW: if you ever catch "Top Gear" (US version) on The History Channel- look for the "One Tank" episode. Brad Lovell in his truck vs the "Honey Badger" in his kayak. They race down the mountain. Bad a** truck yes (funny; my Ranger doesn't look like this)- but the guy in the kayak is NUTS.

Skip to Segment 4- look for the segments on the right hand side of the screen. About 1 1/2 minutes in. Grab some popcorn.....

Hi Jen, Google Means Dry Lake in Johnson Valley. That is where Hammertown is set up. Back door is West of Means and Chocolate Thunder is to the East. We camp above Hammertown to get out of the dust and away from the noise. The dust last year was horrific (worse than Ocotillo at Thanksgiving). Back door and Chocolate Thunder are 2 of the obstacles always included on the course. Hopefully they go up Back Door this year. Google those 2 and include King of the Hammers in your search.

See you soon, Grant

EasyE2 12-16-2012 04:16 PM

I went there last year it's pretty fun, just ignore the dust..a mask for a side by side helps..
Also camped out above hammer town, great spot.. This year I'll try for the same spot see you there !

Jerry Bransford 12-16-2012 04:24 PM

I turn off the road soon after making the turn-off for JV & camp at the base of a moutain which has always been dust-free for me. It is always a quiet and peaceful location to camp for JV except during the KOH event when even it gets crowded. But that's going to be true of any location out there... but I don't recall any dust there.

This is the GPS coordinate of the area I tend to camp at... N34 23.999 W116 31.962

Thanks all for the clarification.

I'll be there Weds-Saturday. I'll be towing the JK with the RV and trying to put myself as close to downtown Hammertown as possible! The Dust, Noise, and Congestion is part of the experience! We were there last year for 2 days and had a great time.

Crappy picture, but if you see the RV/Jeep combo, feel free to stop and say hi:

Here is our campsite from last year. We are to the left of Hammertown below the smallest of the three mountains. The lake bed is to the left of the picture. We were the only ones camping up there last year so we shouldn't be hard to spot.

Be sure to bring some extra-warm clothing & hats peeps, it gets VERY cold in JV in February. Water left outside will often freeze solid.

Hey Brandon, I believe the first cars left the line around 9:00AM. Dakota and I watched some leave and then headed out to the course. By the time we got to Chocolate Thunder it was wedged. We were able to see though. We left there to go to Back Door and found a spot to watch. The bottom of Jackhammer was good for watching as it wasn't very crowded but that is because it's not as gnarly as the other spots. There are very few spectator areas due to the MDR crash a couple of years ago, they won't let you near the course in man y areas.
We will probably skip the start this year and go directly to CT or Back Door (if they are running up) for a good view.

Let me see which way they are running the course and I'll post up a spot where we can meet. Dakota and I will be out on the course early.
