First time Jeep buyer looking for opinion on possible purchase

--->I am a complete newbie so any help would be appreciated. I would like to keep it under $4k. My concern with this YJ is the mileage, dependability of the motor, and whether or not I am going to be happy with the 4 cyl. The only things I know I want are manual tranny, minimal rust, and would like to find one with lift, rims, tires already done though I would be willing to do this myself.

1993 Jeep Wrangler
Runs great!
120K, V4, 5 Speed
Hard top and new Bestop Sunrider soft top
Full doors and half doors with tempered glass windows
New radio with soundbar, subwoofer, CD/CDR player, MP3 player jack
$3800 or B/O

hey and welcome. that mileage isn't bad, they will go forever if you maintain them. the 4 cyl is a little sluggish on the road and highway. the 4.0 is much stronger, i've had both. but that looks like a good buy, see if they have any records on mantenance and what not.

check for rust on floor boards, rocker panels, windshield frame, and rear of frame.

nice lookin jeep, i would haggle them down, and as long as its not rusted out you'd have a great buy for around 3500 bux.

good luck

I appreciate the quick response. Lots of good info in here, I have spent about 4 hours with the "Search" box trying to educate myself.

I hear what you are saying about the 4 cyl. This is going to be a weekend toy so to speak but it will see the highway. Can it cruise at 75mph?

I am a V8 guy, always driven a pickup with a V8 so I am hesitant about the 4 cyl though I have talked to plenty of people who like it. I would be going into it knowing it was a 4 cyl but...............

its a work horse, and long lasting. it will cruise at 75 mph stock. i don't know what size is on it now, 31's it will still cruise ok, after that top speeds are around 65 floored, and your 5 spd becomes a 4 spd:D

and that trans doesn't like tires bigger than 31's either, possibly cuz people tend to bog it down at hwy speeds in 5th, not sure, but most eventually lose a gear, usually 5th.

I dont follow? Probably showing my newbie status here but can you explain further? Thanks

no prob, the ax 5 transmission doesn't always hold up well with tires bigger than 31".

basically, odds are that trans will go bad with bigger tires. but not always, just something to keep in mind.

Personally i wouldn't get a 4 cylinder...

Go for the 4.0L

wrangler purchase

I agree, I own a 4 cylinder. If I was to do it all over again I would start with a 4.0 six cylinder. Probably eventualy I will swap mine over to a 4.0 when I come accross a decent donor jeep.
Good luck.

I agree with everyone else. wait and find a 6cyl. everything else sounds good though, like two sets of doors and two tops.

that jeep looks great, it will do fine for awhile, jsut swap in something origional, go diesel or put a 460 in it do something...talk him down to 3000 or 3500 then give youself a little allowance and start puttin a good drivetrain together, i got a 4.0 with tranny and tcase out of an old cherokee for 1100 bucks, 1500 shipped!!! you have so many optioins and your getting a good solid base for a great trail rig, i say go for it... good luck

4.0

funny this post got me thinkin' and before you know it next week I am headed out to pickup a rusty 94' YJ with a 4.0 5 speed. for $350.00. Have to many irons in the stove right now to do a engine swap but this winter I could do it. Thanks You motivated me closer to getting rid of the 2.5.

thats a good price. if its just a weekend toy, you'll learn to live with the 4banger.
