Electrical question??????

Hi, just replaced the battery in my 98 4 cyl jeep almost 2 weeks ago with an Avd auto grp34 660CCA auto craft silver batt. started fine till yesterday-when i checked things out i noticed the pos term clamp was loose. took it off, cleaned it and put it back on(they had installed the original batt). put it on a charge over nite and it started once and that was it. turn the key and nothing-no dash lights, sometimes get 1 chime but other than that it's completely dead. put charger on boost and turns right over(also did yesterday after i fixed the clamp-let it run for 20 min and didn't charge) thinking i got a bad batt-was worried about the alt till i charged it over nite-should have had more than 1 start in it with a full charge(10 amp over nite-16 hr +)
any thoughts?? luckily for once i saved and found the receipt
thanks

supposing that both your cables are in good condition and the connections are clean and tight then I would take it back..sometimes a cable can look good but be bad, especially if it has factory connected ends

wouldn't it starting using the charger on boost rule out bad wireing? am cliping the charger clips on the batt clamps so it's using the same route the batt is. have replaced the neg clamp-have the pos but the factory one looks like a pain to cut off so i figured i'd save it till i really have to change it. it appears to look good though.

yeah, you would think that it would rule out everything except the connection at the battery posts.even on a new battery the posts need to be wire brushed.even new parts can be bad

Kinda sounds like the alternator is kaput, if the battery isnt charging. Try doing a load test on the battery. My guess is the alternator.

Check and make sure you don't have a short somewhere draining the battery overnight. Use an ammeter or take connection off one side of battery and see if you get a draw when you touch it

did clean the pos when i took it off and then put it back on-suppose i should pop off the neg, clean and put it back on. it did take enough of a charge to start it 1 time--let it run for a bit then turned it off and nothing. reason i have already replaced the neg-had probs with it b4 and it wouldn't tighten enough to be on the post tight. go do that now. seems to narrow it down to bad contact at the posts or a bad batt.

I would think so,too..as you said,a freshly charged, new battery should crank it more than once

Had the same problem last week. There was corrosion on one of the battery cables. Replaced both cables and problem solved.

i'm beginning to agree. tested the relay and it was ok. after putting it back in and re connecting the batt cable i gave both cables a yank and it started 4 times in a row. when it warms up a little i'll be cleaning, replacing and tightening all cables and finally replace the pos clamp. since i pulled on both i'm not sure which one it is but probably should do both any way

thanks
