cj8 inquiry

Hey gents, stopping by from the JK side of the house. I've decided to sell my old car and I'm looking at trying to find a scrambler to build with my boys. I'm having trouble finding what I'm looking for though. I'm basically looking for a clean frame and tub that rolls. The rest doesn't matter much because I have some pretty ambitious plans for it. Although if there was one that was running and in"okay" shape I might go for that too just to be and to roll around in it every now and then while I let parts pile up. anyone know a good place to start looking?

Budget really depends on the product. No more than 10k, but I'd rather spend 2-4k on a clean roller. Has to be a scrambler though. Not interested in 7s. Thanks though.

craigslist is always a good starting point. use search tempest and you can search multiple area's in craigs at once.

cj8's and cheap are rarely used in the same sentence these days..either get ready to spend more than you indicated or look for something else

Unless you have a gold horseshoe lodged..you wont be able to find a Swiss cheese Scrambler for under 5k...have you given thought to a Jeepster? You can hunt down a decent roller for 1500 or less.

Note my screen name.... :banghead: :banghead: :banghead:
Yes, I once owned a Scrambler... best Jeep ever! I really miss her.
Had over $12K invested and sold it for a mere $8k
If you find one cheap... grab it, hang on to it. It'll be an investment!
But I doubt you will... I have been look for a long time now.... :nonono:
Here's a shot of my old CJ8 (gone to Texas now...)

Rubiconcruiser21 01-12-2013 12:32 AM

You may consider a CJ-6... just as rare as an 8... maybe more so. These have a similar body as a 5 except with 20 extra inches in the middle. Wheelbase is the same as an LJ but body is 3 inches shorter in the backend. You can still get soft tops for them and they carry the same parts set as a CJ-7.

Or, if you are good with tools and fabricating you can make your own from a CJ-5. This is what I did last year and it makes a great rock crawler. (See signature for build thread.)

Hey, I know you said you wanted to build your own. But in case you change your mind, I am selling my CJ8. You can still do some work on it but all the heavy lifting is done.
