Big bear in snow?
 
So I'm looking for some expert advice. I have a trip planned early January to trail ride in big bear with 5 jeeps. It shows it will snow the two days before. Is it worth trying? Will the trails even be visible?

Snow is not my best condition to wheel in. You can not see the deep things which makes it very easy to get in a situation that you may not enjoy. I was just up on Pilot Rock and there was some snow on the ground but not enough to bother us. It is when it is a foot or so deep that I don't bother with it. It makes it very difficult to even see the correct way to go at times when it is deep snow. Driving on a road is no big deal however, trails is another thing though.

I totally agree with that, and is why I don't wheel in the snow either. If I do at all, it is a fire road and not a trail that would be classified as intermediate or difficult. That's a good way to break your junk. :(

The trails in BB r like the I-5 at rush hour ....with or out snow. I'd say go for it ...they've had snow for a couple of weeks now and unless they have a blizzard on the day ur up there it'll be ice in the morning and mud through the day ....O and lots of traffic ...
Not sure how ur jeep is setup...but wheelin in fresh powder is one of my favorite times to wheel!

You can always run Crab Flats. I'm sure you've seen the thread for the SoCal run on 12/15 that Gunner set up. I ended up going last minute last weekend (12/22), jealousy got the best of me and I was bummed I'd missed it. There was snow coverage, enough to make me happy, and it was a nice scenic trail with no difficult sections. I'll be going back again soon. My wife and little one enjoyed the areas of uncrowded snow play. If you're looking for something more challenging, though, you may want to pass on that one, though I wouldn't recommend anything challenging in the snow.

This is too tough to answer without knowing your comfort level and experience. What trails have you been on and how did you do? I looked at your garage/profile and didn't see any mention of lockers, but saw that you're sitting at 3" on 33s. Hard to say how much snow you could take on with knowing what we know and not knowing a few things.

Your biggest enemy is ground clearance. If the snow is too deep and you end up just pushing it or dragging bottom you're going to have a tough time, regardless of traction (been there, done that in a different vehicle :banghead:).

For me, I've ran every trail up there forward and backwards so l'm looking for a new challenge and snow sounds like an interesting element. I'd say unless there's like 12"+ you'd probably be ok. Make sure you have winches, straps and plenty of dry, warm clothes in case you find yourself digging (again, been there, done that in a different vehicle :facepalm:).

Lorie we all know the only reason u don't wheel in snow is because it's took cold for u! Haha. I no Bernie would love for u to set up a run in the snow

You gona come up for my recovery party? Jan 11th weekend..Parker's bringing Jess, Bernie and V, George, Lisa and Mike (if he's not working), Rich, JP, Lorenzo, Lisa and Ross, I think Dan's gona drop by and a few others..Dwight and Lynda..etc should be a good time at the beach! BBQ and games..Fun!

I saw pics of someone running John bull with quite a bit of snow. It was fresh no tire tracks anywhere. I'm thinking that would be fun to try. I would want chains though. I've also been in 12" plus without chains and fun it ain't. We should try and come up with a run when they get some decent snow.

I'm pretty comfortable driving but I don't know terrible much about wheeling in the snow. This is my first winter with the jeep. I've done gold mountain up there and that's about it besides messing around in crab flats and on the main roads. I've been chicken to do John Bull because of my lack of rocker guards. I think our planned day is a weekday so I'm not sure how many jeeps will be up there to push down the snow for us. We may just end up sticking to crab flats if the snows too deep. Only one of our jeeps has chains btw. Maybe I should have her go first?

Gold Mountain last year in the snow, it was awsome. It took about twice as long but worth it though.

We had a blast on our Crab Flats run. We had a couple of feet of snow the night before and by 1030 when we hit the trail it already had tracks to follow. Just enough snow for fun not enough to be scary.

I would say that as this is your first winter in the Jeep, stick to a fire road as your first snow run. While Crab Flats Rd. is technically a road, we had several people who needed a tug on it. And it does become Big Pine Flat Trail at the campground. From there it takes you all the way to Holcomb Valley Rd. and into Big Bear. If that's really not challenging enough for you, then I Double Dog Dare you to run John Bull in the snow. Or Holcomb Creek. I won't run those trails when they're covered in snow, can't pick a line to save your life. And the risk of major damage to your heap rises exponentially. Just my $.02.

I WOK ed both those trails a couple of weeks ago...the snow was falling hard and I was the 1st set of tracks on both....it wasto WAY sweet! with no carnage ...:punk:

Yeah, but you've got some experience. And in a couple of inches of snow you can still read the trail. You know as well as I do that once you get 6"-12" of the white stuff on the rocks, you can no longer pick a good line. And that's when stuff starts breaking. Just sayin'

I never said it was my first time driving in the snow, nor is it my first winter in this Jeep or my previous one. I just said I'd like to add a more challenging element to what are now near boring trails to me, as I've done them all - many times in each direction. :D

Oh, and you don't need to double dog dare me.... I'll be up there tomorrow. :dance:

Sorry about that. I meant that for thedaringmove. It was more of a joke on the double dog dare. Lol. And I can appreciate how occasionally the trails can seem a little boring. But I still stand by my assertion that once the rocks are buried under snow, the risk factor for damage is just way too high. At least for me to my daily driver.

No sweat Rob, and agreed. I gave him my $0.02 further up in the thread. There are a lot of factors to consider when adding snow to the equation and yes, especially if your Jeep is getting you to work on Monday. Not that I want to break mine, but I only put about 3k miles on mine last year. It spends the week in the garage.

Well I think I'll warn my friends of the danger and let them choose whether to come along. I don't think ima let the snow stop me if its less than 5~ inches
