Jeep YJ Stalling Please Help!!
1989 Jeep YJ
4.2 Automatic
Howell TBI

My jeep idles fine and can rev fine in park and neutral. Right when I put it in reverse or drive it will bog and stall. I tried to look around for answers but was not able to find what I am looking for.

I leaning towards it being a transmission problem. I think my Howell TBI is fine and my ignition is fine.

Any help will be greatly appreciated. Thank you in advance.

What RPM does it idle at before you put it into reverse? With a major modification like the Howell TBI I would always suspect the modification being the problem just because it's not factory specs but I know it's not always the problem but it's where I always start at.

Some suggestions is it could be bad programming in the Howell TBI system making it run to lean or rich or of course bad distributor timming.

What is the timming at idle?? Should be 8degrees Before Top Dead Center. Also what kind of distributor do you have in there running? Is it factory or is it after market. Like a HEI??

But of course there are many other things it could be. Clogged CAT on exhaust or vacum leak. Vacum leaks are easier to check before any other major work is done.

And on a last note. How long since a tunning has been done? Bad plugs can cause this and even a dirty throttle body on the TBI and bad ignition wires or worn rotor button or distributor cap but again it depends on what you still have in the jeep running.

a guy had this happen a couple winters ago, when I checked it out it had a Rat nest in the air cleaner, he said it had only been parked over the weekend.

All times are GMT -5. The time now is 05:03 AM.
