overtightened rear brake adjuster...

2004 Rubicon D44 with disc/drum hybrid (drum for the emergency brake)

I think I overtightened the rear brake adjuster. But now I can't seem to reverse the star adjuster to correct it.

Should I dissassemble the brake hat/drum or is there an easier way? Thanks

Ben

How tight is it? There should be some drag on the wheels when you turn them.

With the plug out use a skinny screwdriver to lift the arm off of the adjuster star and back it off a few turns if it's too tight.

Disc brakes; no self-adjuster lever.

According to the FSM, there should be no drag from the parking brake.

That's probably the easier option. Unless the shoes are too tight to permit rotor removal; in that case, you will need to rotate the star wheel in the opposite direction.

My Explorer rear discs don't have the adjuster arm but I don't know how the Jeep version works, but since he can't back them off it seemed like something is jamming them up...

Hi again,

Yeah, there is a star adjuster on my setup. The e-brake uses shoes in the hat/drum... but the brake pedal uses the disc/rotor and pads. Anyways, I went too far with tightening the star adjuster. The jeep would roll back when the e-brake was applied, so I overcompensated by tightening too much because I didn't want it to roll back while parked on the trail (even with it in gear, too much to risk if it slipped out into neutral).

I'll try using a screwdriver again to back off the star a few turns. I always seem to screw up a simple job like this. lol.

Thanks,

Ben

I'll try

There's a piece of metal that springs down on the star to keep from backing off. You need to lift it slightly with a thin/small flat tip screw driver while turning the star to loosen.
