My Ordeal

So, it was time for annual state inspections, couldn't find my locking lug nut key, asked 3 Jeep dealers if they have masters, they didn't. Went to a service station down the road, my wife and friends have used in the past, 5 minutes to get the locking lug nuts off (on a side note 3 other service stations wouldn't try, even their cheater didn't work, kudos to Jeep, too bad they didn't have a master). Anywho, rotated the tires, did the inspections and I'm on my way, about 1/8th of a mile down the road I see silver things flying from side of the jeep and my left front tire FELL OFF:banghead::banghead::facepalm:. I immediately swung the jeep into the grass and walked back to the station fuming. Bellowed in the middle of the waiting room, MY TIRE FELL OFF. Service manager was suitably upset and started screaming at the moron who didn't tighten up my tire. Went down the road got a tire on the Jeel and drove back to station. No damage to jeep, tire or lugs, rim was trashed. 3 days to order replacement from Jeep, I have the Sahara with the 18" painted rims. 1st rim was painted but darker than my rims so he sent it back for the other rim which happened to be polished rim, obviously wrong. Now it's been a week. The service manager had to take my spare, the trashed rim so he could match it with rims from jeep.
Has anyone had a problem matching replacement rims? I'm wondering of I'm going to have to fight him to replace all the rims to get them to match. Thanks.

Wow! That is nuts!

That'd be a terrifying moment seeing lug nuts flying off your Jeep.

On the upside, in a couple of years, that's going to make an amazing story.

I'm impressed that only the wheel itself was damaged. Maybe I'm underestimating the stability of a 3-wheeled Jeep though.

The tire was still hanging off the lugs when I got it stopped, if the tire had fallen all the way off I'd probably be writing this from a hospital bed. I was very lucky.

It was, took me a second to realize what I was looking at and then OH MY GOD, STOP JEEP!!

Tire was still hanging? I'd be concerned that one or more lugs is either damaged or could be stressed to the point it could potentially break loose in the future.

Document, document, document. Get names, times, dates, etc of everything done. You may need this info one day in the future. I hope not, but best be prepared in case future problems occur that could be related.

Nahh twice I have had a wheel and tire come off the front, its easer to control then you think. Although when I had a 39 MT Claw come off it was a hard hit when the front end fell that far.

On a side note, reminds me of the old Ron White bit.

Apparently, your guy who graduated from "Tire College" was absent on "Lug Nut Day"

Thank you, very good points. I hadn't thought of the stress on the lugs. They looked ok, but you could be right, rim seemed to take the brunt of the damage, softer metal. I examined them really close when he got it up on the lift, but I'm no metalurgist.

I sympathize. First brake job I did as a kid, I did one side, a friend did the other. Bad idea but I was 16 so did not know s*!t. He did not tighten the right front. I got about 10 miles from school, heard a clunking, & thought it was the driveshaft. I did not see anything so continued on at about 5-10 mph & was passed by my right front wheel. It sheaed off all 5 studs on my Camaro & went for a trek into a nearby field full of sticker bushes and tumble weeds about 200 feet off the road. Unnerving to say the least.
