Dana 44 swap
So my dana 44 rear end is toast. The housing and shafts are pretty much the only parts that don't need to be replaced. I'm at a point where it's either rebuild or replace. Shop wants to charge me 2 grand to rebuild the sucker. Its a 97 and from what I hear it's not the best of the 44's (at least not worth 2 grand if there's a better one out there) The only swaps I see are the 8.8's but that seems to be popular if you have a 35, I wanna upgrade so what's going to be the best axle for 33's (not looking to go ridiculously off-road-worthy it's my DD) oh, and I don't have an issue with grinding and welding

find a new shop. whats toast on it if the shafts and housing are good. IMO 8.8s are over priced for what you get. you'll be close to the same money to get a locked geared 8.8 under your rig as you would be to rebuild your 44.

There's no reason to swap in an 8.8 if you have a D44. Your D44 is no different than the D44 on newer TJs other than drum brakes. Like said, find a new shop, 2k is WAAYY overpriced for a rebuild. For 2k you you should easily be able to re gear both axles plus some other goodies.

+1 on finding a new shop. From what you've said, you are getting raped for this rebuild. Oh, and the OEM Dana44 is a perfectly acceptable axle to run 33" tires, even locked. (And if you don't currently have a locker, now would be a great time to install one since your differential is going to be removed for a rebuild or replacement. Same goes for re-gearing to compensate for the 33" tires.)

Lol ya I called another shop and they offered 1300 to regear and throw in an e locker, calling tomorrow to see what theyll do for the front
