Are you a CHP officer?

Hi gang,

I was wondering if there are any CHP officer present. I am thinking about taking the CHP test but I want better prepare myself for this test. Any suggestions on where to start? Videos, Books, Etc.?

Thank you!

I'm of course not in the CHP but didn't they just announce they were taking applications for the first time in years and only for 2-3 days this week?

I took the test 4 times. Finally gave up. Not to mention who really wants to be AAA with a badge anyway?

ChuckMRN 01-05-2013 10:50 AM

My son-in-law took the test. Made it thru countless interviews and to the Psych eval. In the end didn't make it. Something about him being too passive? He has now been a county deputy for over 10 years. I used to shoot competitively, USPSA, IDPA and 3 Gun, all the deputies and city guys were all really cool and easy to get along with. Most CHP guys I met thought they were the only ones that should have a gun.

Ha that's funny. I used to work with police departments around the country (selling mobile police computers) and a couple times I mentioned the highway patrol as a customer, they laughed and called them 'Auto Club with guns'.

Is this why most cops have such a crappy attitude? They treat most people like they are all scum bags. Perhaps they should try some new approaches. I always give them the benefit of the doubt and then when I have any type of encounter with them I change my mind.

ChuckMRN 01-05-2013 12:12 PM

I think it's pretty obvious the CHP is looking for people with the attitude you describe..

Human nature... my guess is 99% of the people they encounter truly are scumbags. It would take a remarkable person to not get in the habit of that. Sad but true.

Heard this quote abole Law Enforcement attitudes in general;

"The only person I trust is my partner and I'm not too sure about him..."

runzoff 01-05-2013 12:34 PM

Should read about

Then out of the 10,000 applicants these are the ones they should be looking to hire. :thumb: Recently up at Cleghorn I had some dialog with a female officer and another male and they were in separate vehicles and they were both very nice but neither one was a CHP.

I was thinking of applying for CHP too.

I emailed the inquiry address and got a reply, but one of the requirements is you can't be over 35 yo. I though that was odd since I seem to see a lot of old timers in CHP cars. One of them had a handicap placard he was so old. :D

Make sure you're ok with writing tickets and taking accident reports because that is all they do. Good luck to you

Nice to see some fellow Jeepers interested in the CHP. I will be trying to join in the next few years after I get through with school. Both of my parents work for CHP and they really enjoy their jobs. I would highly suggest if you have not done so already, is to contact your local CHP office and ask them about setting up a ride along. Its a neat experience and I have done it a few times. Its by far the best way to get a close look at what being an officer is like. Good luck and let me know if you have any questions that I can ask for you.

x2 on the ride along idea. I've been on probably a dozen or more, and based on some of the comments above, I think some of the people here should really see what a cop deals with on a typical 8 hour shift. You will gain a new appreciation for the amount of stuff they put up with. Like any profession, there are bad eggs, but to be a cop requires an incredible amount of patience in dealing with some of the worst parts of society. Also, CHP is definitely not AAA with a gun - in my experience they are some of the best trained and most professional officers around.

Jerry Bransford 01-06-2013 11:19 AM

Last night's news talked about the current CHP hiring program, said they had over 15,000 applications in the first 24 hours for only something like 110 openings. Good luck.

Try www.chp.ca.gov and look under the recruiting section, becoming a CHP officer. This may help with questions that you have. Good luck

The CHP stands for California HIGHWAY Patrol, not bar patrol, wife beating patrol, trailer park drug patrol. The Roads is their assignment. I feel they are an elite group of law enforcement that has many divisions, including drug traffic, homeland security and many more. I have two son in laws that are CHPs and many friends that are highway cops too, including some on this forum. I've seen what it takes to get thru the academy, six months of pure hell. Maybe why only a few percent make it through the Sacramento academy. Don't be a hater if you haven't been through it or didn't make the cut.
