Mileage on a 2000 Wrangler: How high is too high?

Hi all,

I am new here. Was a Jeep Wrangler owner in the past and am finally getting around to buying another :)

I found one I am very interested in, in my price range. It is a 2000 Sahara 4.0L. It's in great condition but has 154,000 miles on it. Runs clean and smooth, clutch and all gears feel great. Engine looks to be clean and well maintained. Should I be concerned about the high mileage? I know Wranglers are built to last but I stumbled across this forum and wanted to see what the experts have to say.

Thanks in advance!

Welcome. Bought my '01 Wrangler Sport about 1.5 months ago with 140k on it. All good so far. Had to replace the oil sending unit switch which was a real easy part to replace $48 at Autozone. Really been liking my first ever jeep purchase though. Engine has been solid.

Thanks for the response! Congrats on your first Jeep purchase.. You'll be hooked from here on out ;)

Bought mine last year with 134k now it's at 145 it's rock solid. If the price is right I wouldn't be scared.

I bought mine with 180k on it (98 sport). I had to replace the distributer cap, wires, and spark plugs.... but the cap and wires were the originals. Mine was almost a one owner and he had a meticulously filed maintenance history back to 23k miles when he acquired it.

I would take the jeep to a mechanic prior to purchase and have them put it on a lift, inspect for leaks, especially the rear main seal and check the manifold for cracks (typical problems that are pricier to repair). But aside from that, I wouldn't be too concerned.......

ONLY thing I do suggest is consider what your goals are going to be down the road. It may be cheaper to save for a vehicle that already has an axle swap, lockers, winch, etc. (saying this one doesn't). I'm learning that VERY quickly. BUT it's fun and nice to have the project....

When I picked up my 2001 TJ this summer, it was basically in the same condition at 114953 miles but imo if it only had two other owners and was a 60th edition, average out the millage by age... 10k miles per year is nothing lol i beleive i got a good deal at 6.5k

Mello Mike 01-04-2013 08:36 PM

Condition is everything. If it runs well and doesn't have any leaks I wouldn't worry too much. Especially if you can get a good deal.

ThePeep 01-04-2013 08:43 PM

My 99' had 190k on it when I bought it, and now has 221k. I replaced the tranny at 200k but other than that, I've had only very minor issues. A small transmission fluid leak here, little oils dripping here. Hey what more can you ask for when it only cost me a grand

Thinkfastridefaster 01-04-2013 08:51 PM

Thanks everyone.... I'm not sure how I feel about the price and if I am getting a "deal"... They are asking $8900. I've been looking for quite a while and compared to what I've found it seems reasonable, but it blue books for about $8000. But just looking at the market based off of what I've found while looking and how well they seem to hold their value I am considering it??

Think I'll offer them 8 and take it from there.... What's everyone else's opinion? It's in very good condition inside and out....

BreckenridgeYJ 01-04-2013 09:40 PM

Give a breakdown on modifications and if they were done well, tire condition, accessories, find out if rear axle is a d35 vs d44..... if it is stock and a d35, I think that price is VERY high...

Also hard top and full doors add about 1250 to 1600 to value tops.

Thinkfastridefaster 01-04-2013 10:09 PM

This is the one I am looking at...

2000 Jeep Wrangler | 202 W. Kenosha | Broken Arrow , OK 74012 | Broken Arrow, Oklahoma | 918-258-3000 | Broken Arrow Motor Company

What would be fair to offer them?

patriotbrady 01-04-2013 10:13 PM

I think anywhere I'm the 8 range is a decent price if the frame is good, I paid 7900 for a 1999 Sport with 120k miles

Wow! What state are you in? I am in OK and originally from PA and both states I have had terrible luck finding anything below $7,000. Have been looking for months as well.

What sites did you have the best luck looking on?

Thinkfastridefaster 01-04-2013 10:15 PM

Also, tires are also almost brand new....

richsipe 01-04-2013 10:19 PM

I got my 2000 tj on Craig's list for 7k 135K and quite a few mods just be patient. Cash talks and look for someone just wanting to make a quick sale to upgrade etc. you can see my sig - first post for what my jeep looked like on purchase.

BLK00TJ 01-04-2013 10:21 PM

It all depends on how well it was maintained. I can say that that mileage is better on a Jeep TJ than a lot of other cars.

For 9000 you can get a much newer with less miles, let me look and see if i can find some that are comparable.

Thanks for the advice! It is a dealer, but not your typical car dealership... They only buy and sell used Jeeps.

I'd feel better if I could get it for 8k so I think I'll try what you suggested and throw $7,500 cash down on the table in front of them. Lol

Oh, carfax checked out too.. Only 2 owners and regular maintenance.

Bburton 01-04-2013 10:46 PM

If you dont buy this one i will go buy it and sell mine. Unbelievable what you can find if you only look!

Only problem with Craigslist is the unbelievable amount of scammers! Gotta sift through them all to find what's real and what's not. Thanks for taking the time and looking for me, I appreciate it! Tennessee is just a little far for me... I am in Oklahoma.

I agree, but i have looked enough, I can just about tell. That deal could be a scam, bit too low priced. The others are legit though, search jackson, tn craigslist, and memphis, TN, I will go check it out for you if you like, can you tell i like jeepin? Take pics, check rear diff fluid, dana 44 vs 35'. I dont mind helping,
