Scratchy Starter
 
Hey guys!

Looking for some advise; as I've never had to replace a starter. Long story short, I took it to my mechanic this morning. My starter needs to be replaced. There's so many! I know nothing about them really...what brand should I go with?? He wanted $275 for one installed. :eek: That seemed steep to me. ?

I have a 2000 TJ, 2.5 L

Any advise would be appreciated :)

Sounds a bit step to me...but?
As far as brands go....I put one on from AZone about 4 years ago....at a cost of $30 or $40 can't remember and its still workin great! Its a 4.o though.
O and its not a hard task to do....u seam purdy handy...just put it back on the opposite of the way u took it off...lol
Just think of the junk u could buy for Jonzie with the money u save...:thumb:

I would ask him which one he would warranty for 1 year parts AND labor. Thats the one.

Ya, I think I'm going to buy one (just trying to figure out which one) and install it myself...with a friend close by. :) I just dropped $365 for a proximity alarm b/c the scumbags around here keep putting their grimy hands in my Jeep. They got a hold of my winch controller last night, so now I get to rebuy one of those. It's a regular occurance where I live, so to spend another $300 on a starter doesn't make me happy.

You think any of them from Napa would last? Is a starter something you Want to spend extra money on, or is it just a part and we all hope it just works for a while? Know what I mean....like, there's certain things we WONT go cheap on, but things we can..like KC's instead of PIAA's. Is the starter something like that? Or will any do? Napa?? 4 wheel parts?? Top shelf brand or any brand??

Its just a 4 Banger...if it were me...I'd get the middle of the road cost wise from ur favorite auto parts store.....u'll be fine ..my $.02

Buy Napa. And ask for a reman starter not a rebuilt. Reman means they should have installed new bendix, bearings and cut the commutator and new brushes. And at least a 1 year warranty. But if your going to do it then a Lifetime might be a way to go. Sometimes the lifetime ones are not full remans just a quick clean and paint. Ask them which they would put in their gf's car.

That's great advise. I need to write it down..kind of greek to me. Don't really know Jack about starters. I have an awesome guy I deal with at Napa in Ventura.

Dealer snob. Bet they want 300 for just the starter and a shorter warranty.

Yeah just be honest and tell him you really take it out in the desert and if you get stuck you could be in big trouble. If he's kind of a bud then he knows what brand to give you.

Oh, the guys in there know what I do with my rig. They joke around and rib me everytime I go in there. Good guys And they give me an awesome discount :D

Yes, because a starter is essentially an electric motor that cranks your engine to get it going (about 100rpm). This is why the comment was made, because 4 cylinders are easier to turn than 6 cylinders. It is less strain on the starter (turning happens directly at the flywheel).

As a DC motor, there will be some variances in efficiency, and some variance in the quality of internal components, but it is a rather simple system, and spending a ton of cash on it isn't necessarily a big deal. If you have a manual, then get the cheapest piece of crap you can put in there if you are short on cash, since you can always push start the vehicle. Typically a starter does not just die, it starts to exhibit signs of failure, like clicking or taking longer than usual to get the engine cranked. So, it won't really leave you stranded in most cases. I would expect 60K miles from the cheapest starter, and 100K from a top of the line.

Thank you! And it is a manual. One of my other buddies suggested a Nippon Denso. I dont want to spend a ton of money on this if it's unnecessary. Is why I asked all you guys :)
