Tire carrier/ bumper build
Working on doing a tire carrier and bumper build better and cooler than what I can buy. (lots cheaper too).

My idea is a simple bumper with a hitch. I want to incorporate some sort of corner protection. The biggest priority is to get the weight off the tailgate and to add a shelf for a cooler. I am considering offsetting the tire to the hinge side and lowering it for ease of access to the shelf. Space permitting I would like room for a small ammo can and possibly the hi-lift and a fuel can.

The hinge system is the front hub of a GM 10 bolt. I bought one from the wrecking yard for $20. I felt somewhat cheated since I didnt even have to pull it.

Interested on seeing the progress. May be a summer project on getting my spare off the tailgate.

Got the bumper part done, now playing with where I want stuff. Hinge is waay stout and swings nicely. Tripped over an old wildland fire hose clamp one too many times. Using it for the latch now.

Was considering framing above the tire instead of the standard horizontal piece across the bottom. I abandoned this idea because, while very cool, it was overly complex. I was also worried that it would flex too much at the hinge. Although after several rides on my hinge, that is definately no problem.

ok got it figured out i think

Ok. theres the pic of the latch. Red part is the handle of a wildland hose clamp that the kids keep leaving in my floor. the end will sit on a "perch." The pin part of the latch is a piece of 1/2" rod that has a slot in it. Havent figured out how to weld in the latch yet. Any ideas?

Left a ear on hub for added strength. May be awhile for more pics. I just shattered my wife's iPad.

Built the rack last night and today. I need some help (planning on attaching tonight). When I sat it on the supports I noticed the tire is offset 1 1/2" right(hinge). The tire is exactly in line with original mount but 2 1/2" lower.

Question: does the rack look stupid offset to right? Is anyone other than me and you guys going to notice.

And side view. I'm pretty sure it needs outside support.

I think it looks fine. How are your supports gonna look?

Used double latches and rubber bumps to cushion mine , no rattle and plenty strong

Double latched mine , weight adds up fast , bumpy roads don't help. Used the rubbers from the original for bump stops
