Improved 4WD Access at Peters Mill / Taskers Gap Trail System

All,

I had a nice chat with the District Ranger for the GWNF Lee Ranger District this morning about the Peters Mill / Taskers Gap OHV complex. I called to ask why 4WDs were only allowed on the Peters Mill & Taskers Gap trails and whether it would be possible to allow 4WD access to some of the wider trails in the Taskers Gap area or even create new ones. Ranger Donahue was very pleasant and said while she wasn't adverse to the idea it came down to resources and funding. She also stated that they were stretched very thin in maintaining the existing trail system. In regards to gaining access to the existing trails, it seems to be a question of trail width. I do believe, however, that some of the Taskers Gap trail are wide enough to accommodate a 4WD.

I asked her if she had been contacted by any 4WD organizations to discuss improved trail access. She said that the only OHV interest group she recollected working with was the Washington Area Trail Riders. She did say that she had only been the district ranger for the last 18 months though.

Before I reinvent the wheel, are there or were there any 4WD interest groups who are or have previously engaged in a dialogue with the Forest Service about improving 4WD access at the Peters Mill / Taskers Gap OHV complex or adding new trail?

I am not part of an organization, but would be more than willing to help if you need it.

Turbostixxx 01-10-2013 01:06 AM

I too would also be willing to help

Gladi8r 01-10-2013 03:23 PM

Me too...

kawa001 01-10-2013 05:20 PM

Thanks guys. Next steps:
- Assuming there are no other 4WD groups already actively engaged with the Lee Ranger District on this topic I think we should create a coalition of interested 4WD clubs and individuals.
- Conduct a trail width survey on Taskers Gap trails #449 & 493. If anyone has information on these two trails please let me know. I'll either hike these or do it on my mountain bike.
- Coordinate with local ATV clubs to see whether they for be for or against opening of some of the wider Taskers Gap ATV trails to 4WDs.

I am willing to help as well! It would be great to get a few more trails close by!

I would really put a post together and contact the leadership over at NovaJeepers... It's the largest 4WD club in the area, and I'm sure they would be up for helping out....

kawa001 02-11-2013 02:32 PM

Agree. I'm going to do a trail width survey on Taskers Gap trails #449 & 493 before the end of the month and then I'll post out what I found. I've been meaning to join NovaJeepers.

I would check with the rangers office to make sure you can go out there. They have all of Peters mill and taskers gap closed until late March. Just a cya

I think they are only closed for motorized vehicles, I am pretty sure you can still hike them.

kawa001 02-13-2013 06:36 AM

Yes, you can still hike them. Unless specifically posted hikers have complete freedom of movement on public lands in the GWNF day or night, 365 days a year. The MVUM applies only to motorized vehicles (over the snow machines excluded). Mountain bikers can travel on just about about any road/trail as well, wilderness areas & marked "hiker only" trails excluded.

 yes plz, keeping informed on this trail

smileguy49 03-12-2013 10:10 AM

Any updates on this project? I would love to get out and do some trail work so we can have more trails in Taskers. If it is possible lets make it happen! =)

kawa001 03-12-2013 10:26 AM

No. I had planned to hike/bike the Taskers' trails this past Sunday but the snow messed up my plans. My next available weekend to get out there will be 23-24 March.

kawa001 03-29-2013 05:44 PM

So I did a midnight walk on a small section of ATV 493 (Dynamite) on 3/27. ATV 493 is a key trail for those of us interested in expanded wheeling access to the Taskers Gap ATV/OHV trail complex. 493 is an ATV width trail that would require substantial widening to get a Jeep on. Moving forward, I'm going to A) focus my efforts on gaining access to existing trails that are already Jeep width and B) explore the possibilities of creating a technical wheeling trail on the Peter's Mill side of the complex.

Sounds great. When you did speak to the rangers about the possibility of more OHV trails in Taskers, were they open to the idea?

I would love to have a technical area too! :punk: Keep us posted and let me know if there is anything I can do to help. I am a local (only about 20 mins from Peters Mill) so I can be up there fairly easy if need be. Thanks!

BUMP,

Back from the dead!!

So, did anything come from this?

kawa001 04-25-2014 11:05 AM

Nothing at all. It's still a good idea but since posting Red Cloud Off Road Park and Chaos Off Park have opened. I'm spending most of my spare time trail building at the Chaos Park. Improving access at Peters Mill is still a good idea though.

Howdy All ...

I am the Land Use Coordinator for Virgina 4-Wheel Drive Assn. (VA4WDA) which is an association of eight offroad Clubs with almost 500 dues paying members.

Last year I drove to Roanoke to meet Tom Speaks, the GW-TJ NF Supervisor for Virginia. I told him I would meet every District Ranger to see what is going on in the Forest and he promised to smooth the way for me. I stopped by the Lee District office on my way to Big Dogs Icebreaker last week and met Ranger Donahue to offer our assistance.
(Check the "2014 Earth Day Cleanup" thread in this forum for pics of what we are capable of.)

The Ranger mentioned a very intriguing need her District has: she has a dozer operator who frequently must work solo due to manpower shortfalls. If anyone local was able to get away on weekdays to work with the dozer guy for safety and brush clearing it would go a LONG way to opening doors for further trail opportunities.

I am in this for the long haul, and one thing all the Rangers I have met with have mentioned is that they must be able to *count on* volunteers being available when they commit.

If anyone is ready to offer time and labor, please contact me at landuse@va4wda.org
I will gladly coordinate!

thanks

Phil,

Could we ask the FS to stop grading Peters Mill at all or at best only do it every 2 or 3 years? Ideally, the District should let this road devolve into a Potts Mountain Jeep trail type of area. As it currently is, we get charged $10 for the privilege of driving up and down an unremarkable graded dirt road. It's supposed to be an OHV recreational area so why not let it go to Potts? Pardon the pun.

pcwolf 05-01-2014 12:14 AM

Kawa ... I am going to have to drive Peters Mill myself at least once to have an opinion. Can you direct me to the trailhead? I will have some time up there this season.

Where - Who - How is the $10 charge collected? First I heard of such a thing

-Phil

lbredefe 05-02-2014 03:25 PM

PCwolf, I would love to go out in line with you and drive it as well. I have done cove creek and the coal rd/flat tops system, but have not been up by harrisonburg to check out taskers gap / peters mill system.

I would love to help on weekends volunteering, and can do so on a limited basis, my work obligates me 20 weekends a year, but fortunately I know the schedule in advance. I may not be able to commit to a lot of help, but when i can, i always show. Im good with saws. not so much with dozers lol.

pcwolf 05-03-2014 12:33 AM

lbredefe ... not familiar with those trails you mention but I think Coal Road is where we take off on "Big Levels/Bald Mountain" I will be up there this coming Memorial Day Weekend.

The Forest Service will take whatever volunteer effort they can. I am working with the Glenwood/Pedlar Ranger District for a project they are taking on for trail marking, signage, and improvements. Keep in touch with the VA4WDA.org forums for more info.

Thanks!
-Phil

Peters Mill is on SR 675 out of Edinburg.....turn at Edinburg Motors car lot. Permits can be purchased at the Shell station at the I-81 Edinburg exit. 5 bucks for a daily permit, 12 for a 3 day, or 30 for a season pass. Permits can be purchased at the Lee Ranger District office located in Edinburg also, but offhand, I don't recall the street address.

THANK YOU FOR this information. It is good to know for first timers.

I meant to say "shoe creek" and yes coal rd is referring to the same trail system you mentioned.
