Rust and Corrosion
I want to do some upgrade and see that bumpers and suspension along with many other upgrades involve cutting and drilling frame and bracket parts. It may sound odd to some but I always worry about money no matter how much I have or don't have) so I treat my things like they have to last 30 years. This is what is giving me fits over some of these upgrades. If I cut or drill and expose metal it needs to be treated to prevent rust and corrosion. Obviously, the factory e coating and powder coating can not be duplicated in a home garage.

I want to make sure that any cutting and mods can be re-painted in a way that would be durable enough to handle a salty mid-west winter.

What are the best recommendations?

Soon after I bought my 2012 JK I was underneath it to inspect it and see how things were laid out. Found many spots that were almost unpainted or already has surface rust on them. I took it upon myself to clean prep and repaint those areas for added protection.

The paint I used was VHT Chassis Black which is a rattle can Black Epoxy paint. Seemed to spray on well and covered nicely. Also seems to blend well into the factory paint too. I also double coated some areas that I thought MAY cause a problem down the road also just for peace of mind.

I know folks that also use POR 15 with good results also.

I love rustoleum or POR 15. Never had a problem with either

For drilled holes or minor cutting, a bottle of touch up paint works well.

I had never heard of POR 15 I will look into it.

Don't mean to hijack, but the subject is R&C, I saw a JK a few weeks ago with extensive rust on the cowl. Any others that are seeing rust and corrosion on their JK's. I live near the beach and I'm trying to keep mine at least relatively clean by rinsing with fresh water when I can.

I know that past Jeep series were very prone to rust. Are the JK's showing it too? I have not seen a rusty Chevy, Ford Toyota etc. that is less than 10 years old in a very long time. I was kinda hoping that modern anti-corrosion technology had made that a thing of the past. Maybe Chrysler has not figured it out just yet? Or cares?
