Flagpole Run (Sat 19th Jan)

Hey guys planning on doing a run out to Flagpole if the weather holds out. Last time we wanted to make a run we got word from a group that was out there for 16 hours in the snow and ice. So if the weather doesn't look good, we will be going out to Peter's Mill Run / Tasker's Gap before they close for 3 months. Anyone interested in going?

Who'd be our winch? Glenn is still traveling? Sunday is Zombie Jeeps day off. Maybe we can get him to come with if we go Sunday.

Mike has a hi lift winching kit. Sunday isn't good for me, but if everyone has Friday off that's even better!

That sounds like fun! I will try to start scheduling out further so you can make it Troy (definitely not trying to leave you out)

To dan, I was talking with Billy goat Mike today and HR brought up a valid point. If we go on Saturday then you can clean your Jeep on Sunday hahahahaha!!!!

Reaper2332, I saw your post on the Taskers Gap forum. I'd be interested in going if the trail is appropriate for a newb in a stock Wrangler. Just tell me when and where to be.

From what I understand, flagpole will put a stock Jeep to its full capability. I am going to call the ranger station tomorrow and attempt to get a trail report. If it's bad then we will hit Peters mill and taskers gap.

By coincidence, I was planning on running the seasonal forest roads in the area this coming weekend anyway if they haven't closed them. I was in the northern part of the GWNF last weekend doing the same. It sounds like Flagpole is a different animal but trail conditions were good up 3100'. A little wet but no snow or ice.

Flagpole is certainly doable in a stock wrangler just don't take it lightly. It's a beautiful trip, especially in winter when the leaves are off. There are a couple of spots that will give you a rush in a stocker (at least they did for me).

May be off base but I think Flagpole goes to 4200' or so. It's a really nice trip.

So just got word from jwilson, he said a couple of guys went up to flagpole Sunday afternoon and the conditions were good. So lets hope that is our destination on Saturday!

Definitely looking forward to it! Is it pretty easy to navigate once you get to the trail head?

Map looks good. When we did it we came in from Rt 33 out of Harrisonburg to Clover Hill to Union Springs. From what I remember the biggest mud holes had bypasses if you want. The tricky rock shelf (for a stocker anyway) is on an uphill just before the first big clearing, Meadow Knob. You'll recognize it coming when you see a tree leaning to the left over the trail (unless it's fallen). Meadow Knob is a great place for lunch/pictures. The next big clearing, Flagpole Knob is just off the main trail to the left - easily recognizable. Couple of rocky uphills after Flagpole that might be fun when it's slick but otherwise pretty managable to the hard surface. When we were there in November there was a Subaru Outback that had driven in from the opposite direction to Flagpole to do some hunting. FYI, just before Meadow Knob you'll see an old rock structure on your right. The locals told us it was the remains of an old cabin dating from the Civil War where a guy hid out rather than join the army. Don't know if it's true but it's a good story. Again, it's a great, fun trail. Wish I could make it with you guys.

gyramax 01-15-2013 08:14 PM

There are some pictures of Flagpole on the Va Jeep Offroad FB page that show the leaning tree spot as well as Meadow and Flagpole knob clearings. They're under the "Photos" tab as "Turkey Crawl"

It goes without saying that I am in. Get to try out my new rear shocks!

I am trying to rustle up some interest with some other friends who have not been out with us yet.

Dabrewski 01-15-2013 08:27 PM

man, wish you all were doing a Sunday trip! Kids' b-ball games on Saturday but otherwise I'd join up. BTW - you guys rock for organizing these things. Hopefully i'll join up one of these ventures!

of course the wife just reminds me that Sundays are out anytime soon. Let me know if plans change to Friday or Monday!

PS..have winch if that changes anyone's minds? :surrender:

Is this for friends only? If not, how many people you think would come out?

No we are open to anyone. Right now I think we have 5-6 that said they are coming.

sgtkersh 01-16-2013 05:29 PM

We are newbies with a stock JKU Sport and are definitely interested. We would be coming from Manassas. If the snows not bad over the next day this sounds like something we can do.

Although I do have step bars and a rear bumper to install Saturday...but that can wait :-)
