anyone have any experience with the harbor freight tow hooks?

Picked 2 up today and anyone have any advice/recommendations on putting them in?

Another question: I have seen on other forums about straps with hooks and chains and not using them with the hooks. I use a chain will that be a problem?

Thank you as always

I installed the HF hooks on my TJ, but I went to Home Depot and bought grade 8 bolts. I believe the HF hooks come with grade 5 (probably fine), but I just wanted the reassurance of grade 8. :thumb:

The main thing to know is there are "recovery straps" and "tow straps" and the each have their own function on how to properly use. Many tow straps have hooks...when misused to "recover" that hook can become a loose projectile. My buddies have lost front grilles and windshields due to flying hooks. Spooky as hell when one snaps, so no strap hooks for me!

Where did you attach them exactly?

The straps have loops in the ends and that is how you connect them to the hooks.
The straps I had did have hooks but I cut the hooks off and now I have bare straps.

I meant where did you attach the hooks exactly.....I know there is those 4 sets of bolts. DO you just unscrew those and put your new bolts in or what?

Sorry!

Yea, you just pull the bolts out and replace them with longer grade 8's as suggested, just smack the heads of the existing bolts with a hammer a few times to help loosen them and use a big breaker bar.

Just install them here which goes into the frame:
(this guy apparently had his hooks on backwards. lol)

 For the sake of my belief that nobody that drives a Jeep could be that stupid, I am going to assume that the picture was an afterthought when he removed the stock hooks and mistakenly set the other hook there.

Take one of the existing bolts to any good hardware store and match the size and thread pitch and get them about an inch longer, IIRC they are 1/2" by 20 thread pitch, don't remember how long though.

Yeah, I think that is exactly what I did....matched the Grade 8 to the OEM Torx bolt size plus 1" inch longer. (But the bolts that came with the hooks might be the same thread/pitch)

This might be a stupid question, but anyway......bought a TJ last Fall. It does NOT have a front or rear tow hook anywhere. Shouldn't that have come from the factory with those?

No they don't. You either have to buy those hooks or get an aftermarket bumper that has mounts for d-rings.
