2 Dr Coil Swap from 4 Dr w/ Pics

4 Attachment(s)
I recently switched my OEM coils and shocks w/ 4 dr coils and Rubi shocks. I gained pretty damn close to 2.25" on all 4 corners. I still have a very slight rake, but it looks pretty good for the price to me. The local dealership didn't notice the "lift" with my last service and the warranty paid for my last repair.

From the ground to the fender seam, I went from 35.5" to 37.5" all around.

Stock coils were 14 in the front and 55 in the rear. 4 door takeoffs were 18/59s.

Looks good. Can't wait to put mine on this spring with the TF leveling kit.
:-)

cmaggi2 01-15-2013 06:34 PM

Thanks. I may add the leveling kit too after I get a winch or bumper. Do it yourself if you can; you'll learn a lot. The most auto work I've done was change spark plugs before this.

What repair did you have at the dealership?

Looks nice BTW. :thumb:

After the lift, my ABS, ESP and BAP light came on. I had DTC U 1417-Improbable left wheel position. My driver's side rear wheel sensor was broken. I don't think I broke it, but the timing suggests I did. Point being, since I switched the coils w/ Mopar parts they didn't know.

MikeK46 01-25-2013 10:12 PM

Ahh man this makes me so eager to get my stuff installed...it gave you an awesome lift! :thumb:

I'm going from 13/55 to 18/59 with Rubi shocks, so almost the same swap, and I also have a 2dr soft top. I have a heavy front bumper+skid, and have the 1" rake in the front. So for all intents and purposes, I can't help but anticipate getting a similar lift!

I'm also installing the TF leveling kit, and just using one puck in the front, so are you telling me I'm gonna gain 3.25 inches all around?!?! This was just takeoff stuff laying around in a buddy's garage...:eek:

Also, please tell me more about how you think you may have broken the ABS/speed sensor.

This is 14/55 to 18/59 with a teraflex leveling kit and Rancho XL 9000 shocks and it ride's way better than with Rubicon shocks. Rancho are adjustable 9 positions from soft to stiff. I got 2.5 inches with a 165 pound front bumper and winch and it's level. My buddy likes the way it ride so well he's doing his 2013 Rubicon the same.

catahoula1 01-26-2013 05:33 AM

Looks nice guys! I did the same and will be installing a TF leveling kit as well.

MikeK46 01-26-2013 08:37 AM

Good to know about the shocks in case I need to swap. For now I'm going with Rubi shocks since I got the whole set of Rubi takeoffs from a buddy.

Looks like the soft tops get more lift out of the spring swap than the hard tops!

I think ill be golden with a soft

cmaggi2, I like your creative use of OEM components to boost performance. I have to ask if you had a concern with an overly stiff ride going into the conversion. Curiosity has got the best of me.

Espada 01-26-2013 09:37 AM

mcgee10, if I happened by your Jeep I would snap a couple of pictures of it. That is one well sorted ride!

It doesn't get any higher when I take the top off. The picture was taken in November getting ready for winter. My buddy 2013 Rubi he did the same change as mine his is a soft top and they are even if that helps you out.
The rubi shocks are stiff as hell all the time. I set my clicker at 4 in front and 3 in rear for road ridding and it's smooth. Off road I set 7 in front and rear for a much stiffer ride. It takes less than 2 minutes to change them.
I can't figure out where these guys are getting 3 or 3 1/2 inches unless they are guessing or not measuring right. The bigger tires will get you another inch or so.

The ride is definitely stiffer, but not bothersome. If I would have paid for install, I'd suggest getting a leveling kit or real lift from the start. I have no doubt the shocks are better though.

Honestly Mike, I have no idea how I messed that up. It could have been coincidence, but I doubt it. I was very careful w/ disconnecting the brake and e-brake lines and not lowering the axle too much to stretch the lines. The sensors are less than $20, so I could have fixed it myself. I'd just suggest being careful, b/c I didn't notice doing anything that would've affected the sensors.

Careful will be the name of the game!

Is an alignment necessary after the spring swap and TF kit install?

I had a tire company it because I had paid for a 6 month alignment. Real easy to do if needed

I just ordered a Daystar 1.75" Comfort Ride Lift Kit. I currently have 13/55 springs, if i was to switch the springs to JKUR springs for more lift would i need to get new shocks or anything else?

Binx 01-27-2013 04:38 PM

Im wondering the same thing. Are spacers needed after the swap? Would it make it to high? Looks like people are getting pretty good lift out of it from the 13/14-55 combo.

Sport shocks are smaller. It would not hurt to get rubi shocks. It would improve your ride and they can be had for @ $100.

I had 14/55's went to 18/59's gained @ 1.5" in front and @ 1" in rear. The tires added another 1.5". Ill install tf spacer kit 2" in front and 1" in rear.

Man, this is pretty impressive. I was going to go with a lift kit to get 2.5", but If i could get Rubi take offs and get that kind of lift while maintaining my warranty I think I will go that route

GreyGhost 01-27-2013 07:18 PM

Looks good. This is on my to do list.

Found a guy selling the springs brand new for 100. But he's not selling the shocks. Will my 2013 sport shocks be ok with the Rubi springs?

yes. my sport came with 18/58's from the factory. I did put rubi shocks on tho after about 2000 miles and they do ride better in my opinion but you will be fine until you decide to upgrade.

The warranty is the only reason to do this.

Thanks for the help. I actually found a guy selling 4 dr springs and shocks for 200. Might go this route. Does anyone have a write up on the install? I am somewhat new at this.
