newbie tire question re 33's
 
I currently have a 99 sahara -automatic --with 30 x 9.5 R15LT tires....looking to put some 33x12.5's on.......as a newbie here can I put the tires on the existing wheels....or do i need new wheels too and more parts...i had an opportunity to buy some tires for $400 and I turned it down because I dont know waht parts I need or if I also needed a lift kit.. Could i get some direction?thanx.I need to build up in stages here for financial reasons....also any advice on a lift kit idea.....no off roading really doneyet ....highway only..

a tire guy once told me not to go too big on wheels or Id flip it on highway...so I want to still be safe but be able to go offroad if I wish a bit..thanx

i guess my other question is waht is the cheapest simplest lift or spacer i would need.....also is this something that is difficult to do yourself?

Yes you can put a 12.5 wide tire on your factory rims IF...they are 15x8 wheels but, you will have to run a wheel spacer to push the wheel out far enofe that you dont rub them on the frame/swaybar/control arms. Take a pic of the wheels and we can probally tell you if they are of the 15x8 flavor.

There are many many ways to lift it up enofe for 33's but what you get is up to you. The cheapest is going to be a Budget boost and body lift. The better way is a real suspension lift. Most ppl who go with a bb/bl end up getting a real suspension lift later.

Not dumb questions..the dumb thing would be not to ask about what your not sure about.

A wheel spacer is an adapter that mounts to the wheel studs and it has studs to mount the wheel to the width of the spacer is available in different sizes. Spidertrax makes a good line of wheel spacers. Most spacers run around $100.

the spacer is the blue item at the wheel studs.

If it's a stock Sahara then it should have the aluminum wheels that will hold those tires just fine. The problem is back spacing. You'll need to run wheel spacers as mentioned, but wheel spacers cost about the same or more as a set of steel wheels with the proper back spacing. If you went with 33x10.5 you wouldn’t have as much of a problem and rubbing could be cured with just a few washers on your steering stops.

As far as lifts go, this is one thing where you get what you pay for. I would go with a 2" budget boost (spacers and shocks) and a 1" body lift. If you are just looking to clear 33's this will work fine. you can do this for about $350 if you shop around for deals. You'll have to do something about drive shaft angle, two basic ways to do this: 1) get a 1" motor mount lift, or 2) drop your transfer case. If you are looking for clearance for off-roading, you'll want to go with the motor mount lift. Stay away from big body lifts.

You can do all of this work yourself with some simple tools, a floor jack and some jack stands. There are lots of write-ups here and other places on the web. Feel free to ask lots of questions and read as much as you can.

A budget boost (BB) consists of spacers that go on your springs, a body lift (BL) consists of spacers (Or bigger replacement bushings) that go between the body and the frame.

Heres a pic, 3" Full Traction lift, 1.25 BL on 33's. I wish I did the real lift first instead of wasting $$ on the BB. Ended up costing double and double the work.

I could get a pic, but its just the spacers that came with the FT kit. I think they are 1" drop, I do need to about 1 or 2 washers though. Still a vib in 1st and 2nd. Im gonna save for the SYE this spring.

a 2 bb (parts) and a bl can be done for about 180-190 bucks :) (assume you do it yourself and its easy so...)

do it once do it right.
i wouldn´t install a BB spacer lift on top of old and worn out 1999 TJ springs.
better buy a spring lift kit with longer new springs.

also, if you can do a BB, you can install a spring lift in no time. Started mine at 9 pm, finished at 4 am, with the help of my wife and a 12 wheeler

You most likely have 3.07 gears in your differentials and a 3 speed automatic. By jumping to 33 inch tires, your peppy little TJ is now gonna' be a slug. I know you mentioned you'll only be street riding, so you may be able to live with it. Be sure you budget for new axles, gears and a rear differential. This is just a short list; there's a lot more to adding 33's than just clearance.

Well i know that lol. If he has the cash for a coil lift, get a coil lift then. :wavey:
