painting factory rims

Good evening all. I am going to paint my factory jeep rims. They have the fine groves on them. All the stuff i have looked at says to sand with 320, 600 and 1000 grit so that they are smooth. Do these rims need to be sanded smooth or just cleaned well during the prep? Any advise from someone who has done this or that knows something about painting. Thanks all.

i didnt clean mine, just sanded them down with 100 grit paper in the spots i could reach. i didnt spend alot of time. it has been 10 months and they still look great.

now i would recommend taking more time than i did, sand as much as you can, but dont fear to much if you cant get everywhere. Prep is the key to any paint job!

Ok thanks. Just didnt know if i needed to sand all the grooves down or just clean it. I guess if i want a smooth finish i sand them down. But thanks for your reply

If they are aluminum I highly recommend etching primer first and then what ever paint you want to use. three years for my M/T rims and they still look great.

I dont really know if they are aluminum or an allow?

Guess i can use etching primer for allow or steel too.

use a magnet to check them if there steel the magnet will hang to it, if they are aluminum it wont,,,,,---etching primer all the way it,s great

I painteda set of Cherokee rims. I didn't sand them just cleaned primed and painted them. All with rattle cans and am very happy with how they turned out.

What did you use to mask off the edge of the rims?

I used a piece of cardboard that slid between the tire and wheel just had to cut it to the same ark as the wheel

Index cards work great btw tire and rim. Just buy a few packs.
