help 01wrangler sport rear differentail need to be rebuilt
 
today i went to shop and had my rear pinion seal done. the guy tells me, when he took out the seal it looked new and in good shape. he was confused of why the diff would leak. he looked around where the seal goes and he saw little metal shavings. an on the back side of the yoke where it goes in to the diff was a little worn he said he never seen one do that.so he tell me that it still might leak to come back to him after 2000 miles. then with me there he pulls the little plug out of the diff and the oil pours out he show me that the oil had a lot of little metal shavings that something is not right. then he puts everything back to get and test drives it. he tell me that the diff is definitely going. so he tells me the next step is to change all the bearings in the diff and maybe the gears too. he said for him to change the bearings and the yoke it would be with part and labor 600-700 is this a good price with sould i do. im confuse someone please help

oh yeah the price does not include the gears just the bearings and the yoke.

No reason a yoke would need to be replaced unless it somehow got damaged. That is overinflated for just bearings and seals. Bearings and seals would run you about $100. Is it a 44 or 35?

You should be able to replace the D-35 rear axle (Complete / Drum to Drum) with a similar stock D-35 Jeep axle for $250-$450 + labor. Maybe less if you find a deal or a Jeep guy building a crawler / making a 8.8 swap. Might make a good reason to swap to an explorer 8.8 as they look more plentiful and less expensive up your way.

FYI ~ It took me about 4-5 hrs to change all the bearing in the rear of my wife's ZJ D-35 rear. It had a bearing whine when you load the rear in a left hand turn but no metal shavings. That was my first time in a D-35 rear working slow / learning as you go.

With set up and break in, Some metal in the oil is not uncommon, BUT chunks / bits / or shavings should not be in there. On high mileage diffs / Sparkly oil is often the norm.

Also with changing a pinion seal, Re-setting pinion bearing preload is a guess with out removing the ring gear and replacing the crush sleeve. I've seen a few guess wrong and over tighten the pinion nut causing the pinion bearings to overheat and self destruct. Mechaincs who are comfortable building rear axles usually guess this torque well enough to get by.

I did not understand that myself. I told you that seal was replaced not to long before I traded in the jeep.

Depending how long you want to keep the jeep or want to spend. I would uses this as the opportunity to upgrade both diffs. Look around for the best possible price and regear both to like 3.73 or 4.10.
Another option axles from a 4 banger with 4.10's :thumb:

yeah i know i told the guy that and he told me maybe the seal was defective or a bearing was bad. when he took out seal he said that the seal was never lubricated when installed and that worn my yoke he showed me it and it had three little ring worn in to it. so he said i need a new yoke. when he put everything back to gethere and he test drove it he said that the rear is make a roaring noise when he accelerat so he said maybe i need to do the bearings. i dont no what to do now :(

Sounds to me like the guy doesn't know what he's doing and/or he's stringing you along. Someone that knows what he's doing will be able to tell what is wrong and fix it right the first time.

I would get another opinion. Yokes are cheap.

You could probably get a complete axle with 3.07's for cheap if it did come down to that.

The roaring noise is for sure the bearings. Mine was doing that recently and my mech knew exactly what it was. Replaced those bearings and it was gtg.
