Jan 27th Trey Mtn Thread

Here is a solo thread for Sun.

Tater Todd 01-22-2013 08:12 PM

My son and I are in.

Trailsnail 01-22-2013 08:21 PM

Thanks Todd. It was getting messy. Is 10:00 good for you? What about the rest of y'all?

Tater Todd 01-22-2013 08:23 PM

Good for me, will just make for a boring Sat night. Lol.

If I remember you have a winch Randy correct?

Trailsnail 01-22-2013 08:24 PM

The visitors center in on the right coming from the south, before the river

kappaknight 01-22-2013 08:24 PM

I'm down. Can you post/edit the meeting place in the first post? (Road, crossroad)

Trailsnail 01-22-2013 08:24 PM

Yep, got a winch

At the corner of Brucken Strasse & Edelweiss Strasse

Tater Todd 01-22-2013 09:53 PM

Sounds good

kappaknight 01-22-2013 09:56 PM

Do you guys use CB or FRS radios? I think I like FRS better myself. I couldn't pick up all the chatter on the last ride with my temp CB radio.

Trailsnail 01-23-2013 05:55 AM

Most of us have CBs. With smaller groups chatter isn't an issue.

rfortune 01-23-2013 10:11 AM

So is this ride for this coming Sunday? I think I'll be in. I have a CB and a winch.

Tater Todd 01-23-2013 10:29 AM

Not to highjack my own thread but any you guys use a handheld cb? Are those any good?

Trailsnail 01-23-2013 10:54 AM

Rodney, yes it's this Sunday.

Todd, I use a hand held. I believe it works fine.

kappaknight 01-23-2013 01:33 PM

I used a handheld, it was okay though if I had missed something, I wouldn't know I missed it. :)

Tater Todd 01-23-2013 01:34 PM

I was looking at picking one up but the cheap ones are all online purchases.

Do you have Amazon Prime? It could still get here in time.

Tater Todd 01-23-2013 01:42 PM

Nope. No prime for me.

lee indy 01-23-2013 01:45 PM

the handhelds are junk. you need a real antenna to transmit. get a cheap radio and a magnet mount antenna. couple guys in the club go that route and did it for 30 bucks at a flea market. cigarette lighter adapter works well

Michigunman 01-23-2013 06:16 PM

I'm sure there are different grades of handhelds. My experience with the Midland 75-822 has been pretty good, especially when connected to an external antenna. The last time I was out with my daughter it worked fine just plugged in to the cig lighter and using it's stubby antenna. Granted we never got that far apart. There are limited options I found for the magnetic mount antenna. The only place I could find to get a half way decent SWR was on the front fender. This worked fine running the sand dunes. Could be problematic on the trails. Eventually I plan on helping her install a Firestik on the back of the Jeep.

kappaknight 01-23-2013 06:36 PM

Yeah, I'll upgrade at some point... I need more trips and data points to see where the weak spots in my gear are though. =)

Tater Todd 01-23-2013 08:11 PM

You in Mark?

Michigunman 01-23-2013 09:27 PM

Still on the fence. Stacey is interested so if I can work it out, may be both Jeeps. I'll try and figure it out soon.

kappaknight 01-23-2013 09:56 PM

Not that we'll need it... but I've added an air compressor to my arsenal which I'll bring with me.

lee indy 01-24-2013 07:05 AM

what compressor did you get?

The expensive one... :whistling: Viair 450P "It'll pay for itself eventually..." is my justification.

I figured I'll try to be more of an asset on the next ride instead of a mooch.

Sweet, that should fill up my tires....err your tires pretty fast!

Tater Todd 01-24-2013 09:29 AM

I can see the line of us already. Lol

lee indy 01-24-2013 09:39 AM

i have a viair 88p love it. chris at jeep addons hooked me up. it will do mine quick enough. and given time to cool off and not in a hurry it will do a couple jeeps. im just a little careful about the temps ill let it reach.

Yeah, I blame Amazon. The 88p was where I started reading. It didn't mention anything about 33" tires. Scrolled down, saw suggested alternatives... clicked over...

I repeated that step about 5 times from 31, 32, 33, 35, 37+ tires. :nonono:

But at least the group will be able to air up for free. :)
