Used TJ -- too good a deal?

Hey folks,

I'm a Commander owner in search of a TJ. Budget of $10K. Moderate off-road use mostly here in So. CA, so mostly dusty, rocky roads. Want to bring my 2 1/2 year old son.

Two Jeeps popped out in my search. A one owner 1997 TJ Sahara with no mods, hardtop, 126K on I6 with auto tranny (is that a 3-speed?) for 8988 at local dealership. I would try for $7.5k.

And this one:

Jeep Wrangler--------selling 7,500 less than worth-------

which seems like a good deal, but almost too good so I'm a little suspicious.

Any buying advice appreciated. Especially hard top/soft top, I6/4cyl, Auto/Manual, with mods or without, etc.

Thanks!

Welcome to the forum, and id go check out both of them and take em for a drive. I drove a 4cyl and didnt like it very much. They are both good jeeps. When you go look at the 4banger make sure it wasnt beat on.

The 6 if you can find one is the engine most people like to have for the extra power. Also if you can find one with a dana 44 rear axle, has a metal drain plug in the diff cover, is also a much better axle than the dana 35, plastic drain plug. As for auto or stick, which ever one you like more. Both are good units. Like any used auto check it out, some have been well taken care of others have been beat to death.

97-99 6cyl models had a known issue with the exhaust manifold cracking. Can be fixed but can cost if you can't do it your self.

As for the jeep with the lift and tires for a really low price, check it out call him, if your not sure about the Jeep, do a phone number search, it gave a name and address for the that number when I tried it,m see if that is what the seller also gives you and go from there.

you wanna check the suspension if it has bean beat it might sag and rub on the finder check for any dings in the undercarage
leaking anything? check 4x4 before you buy thats how i got screwed! ugh just get under it and look for any bad dings. mine was beat when i got it. check the leaf spring mounts those get bent when people like to mess with there jeeps. but its hard to tell from just looking at the pic you have to drive it make sure it shifts into all gears smooth, if its manual make sure it can down shift smooth also. other than that thats really all i can think of like i said you have to drive it. im not a fan of 4cyl auto. to slow on the start from what i have driven. but the 4cyl manual arnt that bad with speed top speed is like 75. 80 on a down hill hahaha
but there a good work horse.

97 4 cyl

My 97 4cyl has been a reliable 4X4 but it lacks power. It mostly shows up on hills, most people want to speed around me as I am downshifting. No ther known issues.

So if the 6cyl engine is the same through 2006, then why did the manifold problem stop after 99? I only ask because I've seen some posts where people have replaced the manifold more than once, but it seems like it should be a one-time repair.
