Lock Storage

Hey guys,
What are some good products to buy in regards to locking storage? I was looking at the security box under the seat and the locking cover for the storage in the back, but has anyone put them in? BTW, i have a 2012 Sport.
Thanks!

Bobonowski 02-01-2013 04:19 PM

I forgot to mention it's a 2 door.

I have the best top instatrunk that goes in the back. It's great when the tops off because I can have more, larger valuables in the back and people can't take my things! It does take away a couple of inches of depth from swing gate to back seat but I think it's worth it. It's like $200ish, and I got it from jeep4x4center.com. On the website they have a video for it.

I have 09 Two door.

I don't think either the Bestop or the Tuffy underseat lock boxes will work in a 2-door '12, due to a bar for the fold & tumble seats (or whatever they're called). Could be wrong.

Here's a link: Under Seat Security Box

I don't have any experience with a lock box but the tuffy ones seem to be on the forums here pretty frequently.

Some other options for creating lockable spaces:

A guy named sunnykk installed glove box, console and cubby storage boxes in this thread: Big Tuffy Install day for me today
Locking storage in rear cubby
Tuffy Locking Cubby Cover For JK - Plastic Liner?
Tuffy Security Tailgate Enclosure for JKU
Underseat Security Box?

I've got the Tuffy concealed carry box and the Tuffy security deck in my JKU. Both fit well and work exactly the way I wanted em to. Good stuff. :thumb:

Bought a new soft top off of C.L. This weekend & now thinking about both these options. Does the security deck plate go down behind the back seats so you can't just fold them down & reach under it with the top down? Seems like a dumb question, Just couldn't tell when looking at them online.

burton09 02-06-2013 05:58 PM

Yes, there is a plate that goes down behind seat. If you have a 2 door I believe you have to remove back seat to use security deck. They do have an insta trunk that works with seat in but not as much storage area.

Ok, thanks. Seemed like a no brainer that it would, just didn't see anywhere mention it.

DozerJK 04-25-2013 09:26 AM

Has anyone here made progress with finding a secured storage option that would fit a 2012 JK? (Besides the trunk storage option)

Has anyone ever seen a backseat slideout storage option that could be faced towards the trunk?

Barmanvarn 04-25-2013 09:28 AM

I heard someone was coming out with an under the seat box for drivers side that will work on 12s. Supposed to be out this summer. Can't recall the maker.

I have the tuffy rear cargo locking cover and the tuffy glovebox is on the way.

Do you like the rear cargo lock? Did it shrink the storage capacity at all?

And I take it Bestops 100% definitely does not fit the 2 doors-- even without fooling around with it?

Just to be clear, I'm talking about the locking lid for the rear cubby hole thingy.

No, I didn't lose any space. And I replaced the key lock with a combo lock from tuffy. I also like that you can't open it without opening the rear gate. Makes for extra security and its pretty much hidden.

I have the Tuffy Security Enclosure and no you don't have to remove the rear seat. I think there may be an optional one that you can but there is a Tuffy trunk that secures the area behind the rear seat. Works great and no way anyone is getting in there when the tailgate is locked. And with the top down the lock buttons are disabled so you can't just hit the unlock button.

This may be a dumb question- but couldn't they just reach in and roll your seat up and then get to whatever is under the secure tray?

Nope, there is a piece of metal that runs along the front of the tray.

Here is the bigger version with the top removed.

ooooh ok- never knew that, thanks! Did you notice a difference in storage space now (not that there was ever a lot)? I thought it was just a tray top that could be taken on and off easily... I usually store a lot and roll the seats up a lot for longer stuff

DozerJK 04-26-2013 12:08 PM

Does anyone have the Tuffy armrest insert lock box?

PecosRiver 04-27-2013 03:50 AM

I have the under seat box from BestTop and it works fine in my '13 when you remove a plate that holds wires in place. 2 bolts to remove it, no big deal. I just zip tied the wires to some place else under the seat.

MI JeepSkate 04-27-2013 06:09 PM

i store my liquor in the hard top case carrier in the back when i go to state land parks.if i have stuff to hide i put it there. also theres a thread on here about a guy who removed his rear seat and made a cover over the rear foot wells, it was more hidden than locked and safe, but it looked damn cool. plus it gave him extra room for stuff in the back

So, I just bought a 2013 Rubicon... 2 door/dual top, etc

I would like to get a lock box / security device in the back area...

What do you recommend is best?

Smittybilt Part 2763 - Rear Lockable Storage Box
or
Tuffy 282-01 - Tuffy Security Products Tailgate Security Enclosure for 11-13 Jeep® Wrangler & Wrangler Unlimited JK - Quadratec

Thanks in advance for your advice...

Well they all look secure it has come to me that almost non of them are. My friend that works in a auto body shop told me and showed me how to open the rear tailgate door on a 08 threw 13 JK wrangler with a paper clip as fast as I could with my key. I went out and bought one of these.
I have it hooked where the rear seat hooks to the floor.

Paper clip...............

It's sold as a gun safe for your car, truck, jeep you can lock anything in it. The cable end after you loop it around your seat anchor or something that's not moving the cable end locks inside the box. Here is a link with some pictures-http://www.amazon.com/GunVault-NV200-NanoVault-Style-Pistols/dp/B00384755S/ref=pd_sim_sbs_sg_1.

And yes as shocked as I was he opened my locked tailgate in 3 seconds with a bent paper clip. But he could not do it to the side doors for some reason for those he said he needs a toilet plunger.

I always go with Tuffy if they have the product. I've just had better luck with them. I currently have the Tuffy glove box, Tuffy underseat storage and the Tuffy tailgate enclosure. All are quality products that fit great and actually look like they belong in the jeep. Tuffy usually costs a little bit more, but I think it's worth it.

You are comparing two different products. The Smittybilt is a pullout that takes up the entire rear section of your jeep in a 2 door. The Tuffy product is smaller and you can leave the rear seat in or remove it and have more open storage.

VDP locking hidden storage vault

Today I installed the VDP hidden storage vault. I ordered it about 2 weeks ago and it arrived today. It is made to drop into the well behind the back seat. No new holes required as it has a bolt and 2 plates that fit into the drain hole. It took all of 5 minutes to install.

However, it does not fit in snugly so I put some foam padding around it so it would not rattle. Also, I added a larger bulkhead washer to make the installation more secure.

It probably could be pried out with a crowbar but for my purpose it will be a good place to leave valuables or handguns out of site and pretty secure.
There is less space than the well offered but it is adequate. I am happy with it but it did need a bit of tinkering to fit it in better.

What is also nice is that it in no way takes away any space in the rear area. I can easily carry luggage or a few rifles to the range with the rear seat forward. In my retired '94 YJ I had installed an Instatrunk. It was also reasonably secure but it was a permanent fixture and made it difficult to transport anything long or tall so I passed on that for my 2dr JK.

It is available on a couple of sites but I purchased it for around $90 and added a set of handholds I also wanted to get free shipping from 4WD.

Those with the tuffy under seat storage, does yours rattle? Mine does and I can not seem to figure out where it is coming from.

jmb6420 07-23-2013 09:27 PM

Mine doesn't rattle. I did line the drawer on the inside with some toolbox drawer liner. Maybe that helps.
