What's the best Cherokee
 
My son wants to buy a Jeep Cherokee. I know some you you have Cherokee's also. I know the 2.4L years aren't so good. What years and/or options are best for him to look at?

i had a 96 4 door with the 4.0 i absolutly loved it and it was great off road, but unfortunitly it didnt float:(...but it was a good jeep....i also had a 91 with the 4.0 high output (only available a few years)and towing package, im not sure what was upgraded for the towin package but when i flipped the switch, that thing could pull pretty good...i also had a 89 cherokee sport 2 door, with the 4.0 it last over 300,000 miles, so all in all i think most cherokees are fairly dependable

As with any jeep, price can play a big part. But Keep away any of the 4bangers, and the GM 2.6(?) 6cyl. I would look at 93 to 99, as that is the 1st year without the center axle disco and 99 is the last year for the HP front dana 30. Most will have the dana 35 rear, some 87/88's with the tow pkg had the dana 44. You can also find some with the 8.25 rear but they came in both 27 spline and 29 spline versions. You also have the 4.0L from 87 up, early years had 175hp vs the 190ish of the later HO versions. Other than that look it over.

ya xj is a great jeep, i've had three. my current daily driver is a 96. i love it. i would take an xj over any grand cherokee's though. i agree with everyone's advice on years and such.

97 was the redesign, prior to that the rear hatch was fiberglass and the dash was very different. We have a couple in the family, 96, 97, 98. Mechanically they are not much different. Older ones, 80's to 90's had closed cooling systems that had an expansion tank on the firewall, they need to be replaced about every 8 years or so, plastic and they hold pressure, nothing wrong with that just one of the differences. Newer ones, 91 onward I think, they went to an open cooling system, pressurized radiator with an expansion tank. 97+ issues, A/C evaporators suck and it's an expensive repair, the whole dash has to come out to get at the heater box, fuel pump sending units, not the pump, just the sending units. 1999 they went to a 0331 head that is subject to cracking between the 1st and 2nd cylinders, pop the oil filler and look down around the valve springs, look for any green antifreeze in there. Drivers seats tend to break and the back part sags a bit, I've had mine fixed twice by an interior auto place, easy fix and also gets the seat repacked :D
Otherwise they are bullet proof, my 98 is just a tad short of 400,000mi, it did get a new jasper engine at 330,000 mi, stuck open injector wiped out number 3 cylinder.

I had an '80 with the I-6. Loved everyhting about it except the tailgate hinges rotted apart. I could not stand to listen to the tailgate slamming over every bump anymore so I got rid of it.

I had a 2000 Cherokee, best Jeep I have ever owned. I put 95,000 miles on it sold it to my g/f. Hindsight being 20-20 I should have kep't the Cherokee and got rid of the g/f. Oh well.:banghead:

oh and the nice thing to is, the 1990 and 1991 i had, we put around 40-50k on each and sold them both for what i paid.

Anything 87 and newer will have a 4.0 or 4 cyl. Pre-87 had the GM V6's that sucked big time. I'm sure you can find a decent one from like '93-96 for cheap, and them are some good years.

Thanks for all the advice. My son is in Army Basic Training and plans on using the money he's saving to get the Jeep. It sounds like I'll be in good shape as long as I stock to the I6, 4 Liter

ive seen daves dd xj do some pretty cool stuff offroad..

i got a 96 xj myself.. mainly a work truck.. but its still great and has lasted 106k miles with barely any problems

im pretty sure some of the newer xjs had coils front and rear instead of coils in the front and leafs in the rear

Nope, no coils in the back on any of them from the factory. You can pick up 97+ XJ's in NJ off of craigslist for under $3,000 if you want to travel that far, jeep prices seem to be regional, here in PA they tie them to the oil prices or the gold standard or something equally ridiculous.
I know I can sell either of my 97TJ's for more than I paid for them in NJ and CT and that was 4 years ago.
