CJ-7 Original Front Brakes
Okay so I have an 85 CJ-7 I just got. Unfortunately I am not home nor can I drive right now (silly laws) so I cannot check and neither can anybody in my family. I was wondering if all CJ-7's of this year have front disc brakes. I was told it had drums all around on it but I cannot for the life of me find anything on it having drums in the front.

Also for a daily driver are rear discs necessary?

thanks mates, sorry for the rookie question, I googled it and found nothing :/

'85 will have front discs on the Dana 30, and rear drums on the AMC model 20.
This brake set up, when in good working order, will be fine for a stock rig, and should be fine for tire sizes up to 33". It will be a good idea to run light, alloy wheels to minimize weight if you run 33x12.50 tires.
You can drill the rear drums to improve wet and dry performance. Drilled drums are as effective as stock discs and better in certain circumstances. Personally, I'd take this approach over adding rear discs if you are staying at 33" or smaller.
(I ran drilled 11" drums on all corners of my '71 and it worked superbly, with 33s on steel wheels)
Look up C.H Topping for more info on drilled drums.

You can upgrade the rear brakes to disc but I have seldom heard much good about kits on the market to do this, such as SSBC

I would be nervous to drill them myself and unfortunately that place you told me to look up is in CA and I am in CT on the other side of the U.S.

Do you have any opinion on this rear disc swap: AMC 20 disk brakes

Only thing is I have a Dana 44 in the back from a swap done by the PO. Also right now the jeep has a 6" lift and 37" tires. I plan on dropping it to either 2" or 4" of lift and the 33s I have since I will be daily driving and I don't think I can do 6" of lift and 37s on the highway.

Seems like a good thread. Be sure to consider how your D44 is different from the AMC 20.

The rear residual pressure valve in the MC will need to be changed for rear disc if it is currently set up for rear drum. (Drum need 10 lb residual; disc need 2 lb). I'm not sure if proportioning valve changes are needed.

It seems to me that I read somewhere that ZJ D44 rear discs are a direct swap to a CJ rear D44. My memory on that swap isn't clear... I suggest you do some research on that topic... it may be easier than the swap proposed above.

Regarding drilled drums, any good machine shop with a Bridgeport and a dividing head can drill a bunch of holes in your drums; shouldn't cost much. Deburr the inside before use.
I bought a drill press and drilled my own.

Well I looked up the swap and I think it is direct but everybody gives me the overwhelming feeling that it is unnecessary for the money. I have read that some sort of dual brake booster kit can help braking much more but I don't know where to look for the kit.

Also I might get the stuff for that kit plus get my rear drums drilled too.

Vanco has a hydroboost kit. Not cheap, but very effective.

Yeah looks to be about 1k by the end of things with those kits. They have the navajo brake booster but I don't think they will ship outside of new mexico.

Also my cj has a chevy 327 in it, would I have to get a different kit then?
