New Trail Open in Calico

As some of u may know I'm a local in the Calico & Stoddard Wells area and I'm always scouting for new stuff to run. Last week a buddy of mine and I were out lookin for something completely new to try and came across a beautiful canyon that seemed like some fun so we went back yesterday to take a run at it.....well it was a beast! ...4 waterfalls and all shale rock and at a 40/50 degree climb ...FUN..after about an hour and a wench line to my buddy we made it to the top...it turns out its a sweet short cut to "The End of the Earth"....sorry I'm not GPS savvy but to get to this trail u'll take Mull canyon to Tin Cup Ally and run it all the way (stay to the right at the Y) till it dead ends into the canyon...u'll be looking right at it...(its easy to find ur way to it because of the white arrows on the ground from a foot race recently ) so next time ur in Calico go check it out and give it a try....

I H8RDS 02-07-2013 01:22 PM

Well now Steve...that's on the list of things to do :D

WOKNROX 02-07-2013 01:27 PM

I H8RDS 02-07-2013 01:28 PM

Probably won't do it on my run with 20 rigs and some not so built up yet..but I will get to it...maybe with you?

RadarRob2012 02-07-2013 01:45 PM

Just saved those directions to my phone. Will have to check it out real soon. Thanks Steve.

WOKNROX 02-07-2013 02:12 PM

To problem...I'd love to get out there anytime ..give me a holler ...I'm hoping to run another new rockgardin canyon out there real soon(as soon as I can talk my buddy into it) as well...I'll keep u all posted

I'm thinking a 4 banger, 4.56 gears and 33's is a push..but when I drop my Atlas in her? Prob good to go?

I've got another 17,000 miles on it. Lol

WOKNROX 02-07-2013 03:11 PM

Just joking with ya Rob....its just really step and loose ...and then u throw in the numerous waterfalls and its interesting ...

I think the Atlas won't be of much ues here...I have a 4:1 TC with 538 gears on 35s and I was in 4th and then 3rd most of the time
....wheels speed is what u need to muscle it over the waterfalls

Well I do like me some skinny pedal. Lol. And I have friends with winches and straps who know how to use them. Lmao!!!

I H8RDS 02-07-2013 03:21 PM

Hmm, well, I'm willing to look at it..sounds like it may not be something I'm willing to do in my DD, and 3.5 hours away from home.

WOKNROX 02-07-2013 03:32 PM

I know Rob will find a way up that bad boy....just throw some Monster down the pipe..

Lori u'll be fine ur locked at both ends ....after all trips u've done to Calico & CB with no breakage....u'll be fine ....give it a go!
If u do it this weekend u'll be the 3rd person to have ever driven a jeep up it! That is Rob doesn't beat u to it....lol

O and we still need to name it?

I H8RDS 02-07-2013 03:38 PM

Sounds like a Goliath to me!

I'm in steve, I have a GPS so we CA map it...I haven't found the meet and great thread...sign me up for the run.....we will hook up at TDS and find brian to go lower 13...then we can proceed to the raffle and win it all...

JoeBot13 02-08-2013 01:07 AM

Is that the canyon just north of the stone cabin? If it is I have the Lat/long to that ... I was exploring back there one day and came across what you described ... I was by myself so I ended up walking the trail but it looked like a hell of a challenge ...

Or are you talking hidden valley on the eastern face of calico peak ... I was looking for a way to get to the eastern side from the north and found a narrow atv trail that matches what you describe ... Again I didn't run it because I was by myself but I took note of that location too

Moabrubi 02-08-2013 01:44 AM

Sounds fun, I need to spend a weekend out in Calico. I've never been there in the Jeep.

Not sure about the stone cabin but it sounds like u've got it....they ran a cross country foot race last weekend in Calicohalf and they ran down that canyon ....so right now its very easy to find it. From Tin Can ally u'll back track the arrows right up the canyon and from The End of the Earth (checkpoint 3) u'll follow the arrows down the canyon.

JoeBot13 02-08-2013 09:12 AM

Ohhh okay awesome .... I know exactly where you are talking about ...

I've been calling "End of the Earth" the "Coyote Lake Overlook" .... I tried to find a faster way to get there and I came across the same route you did ... except I found it from the top ... I started my way down it but the trail got tough quick ... I wasn't about to head down it alone ... I marked the location to check it out later ... here is the lat/long for steve's sluice for anyone who wants them:

Bottom: 34.997307 -116.828174 Top: 34.999938 -116.830086

There is another little known trail that I found out there. I walked it because I was by myself... but it is doable because I saw rub marks on the rocks and tire tracks. It is just north of the Stone Cabin. You can get there by heading to Wallstreet Canyon. Instead of heading south to the overlook... you head north up the wash which will lead you to the stone cabin. Keep heading north and you will wind up heading into a tight, narrow canyon. The technical section itself is about 200 meters ... but it's got a quite a few squeezes and waterfalls packed into that tiny section. The end of the canyon will dump you out on a road that head to "The End of the Earth" so you could actually make a loop out of these two hidden runs ... head up Steve's sluice up to the End of the Earth and down through this canyon ending up at Wallstreet ...

Lat/Long to this canyon is
Start: 34.9795222, -116.8713500 End: 34.9808639, -116.8707167

I'll make a map to the hidden runs and post it up here ... I have the day off and I'm bored lol

WOKNROX 02-08-2013 09:28 AM

Sweet....I think another trail I'm looking at cutting next is in that same area ur talking about....u'll start down by Wall St and run a really sandy rocky wash all the up to the main road that takes u out to Mull....when u cross over the road that takes u to The End of the Earth the (new) trail changes to mostly Big rocks, waterfalls (FUN) and tite squeezes ....at the top the rocks r red and there's a big hole like cave in one of them....I know u've all seen it.
Now I'm wishing I didn't come into work today on my day off for the OT!
