Cmon guys

JOHNSON VALLEY • The driver who was arrested in suspicion of driving drunk and killing three Hesperia teenagers in a head-on collision Saturday night was identified as Charles according to the California Highway Patrol.

Charles 31, of Thousand Oaks, was booked into the West Valley Detention Center for gross vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated, according to the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s website.

Persons’ bail is set at $250,000, and he is scheduled to be arraigned in Morongo court Tueday. The District Attorney’s office hasn’t received the case yet, spokesman Christopher Lee said Monday morning.

Charles had been camping out near the Johnson Valley Off-Highway Vehicle Area for the annual off-road race, CHP Sgt. Bill Green said by phone Monday. He was headed to Yucca Valley in the evening to get some supplies.

The accident happened at about 8:10 p.m. when Charles was driving his 2012 Chevy Silverado pickup truck southbound on two-lane Old Woman Springs Road (Highway 247) near Olivine Road.

Trying to pass several other vehicles, Charles crossed over the double yellow lines and got into the northbound lane near the crest, Green said. At the same time, a 2001 Saturn sedan, driven by 18-year-old Tyler Shane Correll, was traveling northbound and climbing up the hill.

The two drivers saw each other, Green said. Charles and Correll swerved in the same direction and collided “headlights to headlights,” according to Green. The two cars ended up on the east shoulder of the road.

Correll and his two passengers — Jordan LaRocque, 17, and Ruben Ramos, 18 — died before fire rescuers extricated them.

Charleswas transported to Hi-Desert Medical Center in Joshua Tree for a back injury before he was arrested, Green said.

His passenger, Swink, 35, of Thousand Oaks, suffered internal head bleeding and spinal compression in the lower regional, according to Green. Swink was taken to Desert Regional Medical Center in Palm Springs.

Old Woman Springs Road was closed near the scene for about an hour and half, according to Green.

Correll, La Rocque and Ramos were on their way back from Yucca Valley where they were running a family errand, Green said. Ramos, who was sitting in the rear seat didn’t have his seat belt on, according to Green.

I was not present at the court appearance, nor do I have access to the official charges at the arraignment, but Local paper in Victorville original article stated as above. But two days later stated only charges were vehicular manslaughter and no DUI. Then again press is not always accurate.

Why does the scum bag always survive and the innocent burn to death or end up a paraplegic?

minisaba 02-10-2013 10:51 PM

I really hate the fact that in many of these cases is the person under the influence is that one that survives! Not fair!

Maybe they are waiting for blood test or some other kind of result from the police lab before they can add more charges?

I heard the other drivers on the road said this guy tried to pass several vehicles in a no-passing zone and ended up killing these kids because he was in a hurry, don't know if he was dui yet.

When I was doing the Dirt bike thing I had two buddies who drank and then decided a night ride was in order. They had a head on with each other. Cost one guy his hand. Thank God they had put on their helmets. Anything that is remotely connected to the OHV there is going to affect opinions. I was gonna say "why do people drive drunk" but the answer is they have impaired judgment. Thats why I quit drinking. I did not want to kill someones kid.

This is a sad deal for sure. My thoughts and prayers continue to go out to the family's of 3 young men that lost their lives. I cannot imagine living with the thought of being responsible for something like this.

Very Sad. I just drove that road on both Thursday night and Friday morning to get to and from Barstow and KOH.
