TJ comparison question
 
Hey guys, I haven't owned a wrangler since 2002, so I am itching to buy a used one as a second vehicle.

i have about a 10-12k budget so here are the 2 I am torn between. Could you TJ experts give me your opinion on which you think is the best deal? Here is the general run down and all the info from each:

1. 2003 Sahara, 49k miles, lift kit, 33" tires, mirror movers, door defeats, K&N high flow air filter. (the guy that owned this put in a lot of money and took care of it well)

2. 2006 Wrangler X, 72k miles, just new slightly rugged tires, no lift, no other modifications

I guess my concerns are mechanically. At what point do you need to replace the transmission/clutch on these guys? Also, what does sahara offer in TJ models, is that purely non-mechanical, trim-related stuff? Thank you

If there about the same price, the Sahara seems like a better bet. Also make sure that it has the 4.0l engine...Good luck..:thumb:

All Sahara's and unlimited models come with the 4.0.

They're both 4.0L V6. Both about the same price. I was leanings towards the 03 as well; I love the idea of lower mileage. I'm trying to figure out the differences between the Sahara and X trim packages are too, and I'm having trouble. Please let me know if you guys know. Thank you.

Yeah. And to confirm I lined them up on KBB under car research. They both have V6s.

I6 man, 6 in a straight row. Personally I would lean towards the X since it hasn't been messed with yet.

I just bought a 2006 Jeep Wrangler X with 68,000 miles and I love it. It runs great and is exactly what I was looking for. I changed the spark plugs to the double platinum champion plug and man did that make a difference. They needed changed anyway. My opinion, GO X!!!

If you feel that you would want a lifted jeep. Go for the Sahara, as long as the lift was done properly with good parts. Also with the 33's at least 3.73 gears in the diff's.

@btoler - What did the double platinum sparkplugs do for you?

@cr_wrang - Can you explain the 3.73 gears in the differentials comment? And yes the lift was done by a reputable company according to the current owner.

2000 and newer 4.0L engines are very fussy about what spark plugs they run well on. If you want to install new plugs & want them to last longer than the conventional technology factory plugs, double-tipped platinum or iridium-tipped plugs are what you want. Good double-tipped platinums include the Autolite APP985 and Champion 7034, both of which will perform well for 100K miles. For iridium-tipped plugs which will perform well for probably 200K miles, Autolite's XP985 is a good choice. The type of technology you need to avoid is single-tipped platinums, which just means the platinum coating is only on one side of the spark plug gap, instead of on both sides of the gap like double-tipped platinum plugs. The reason for that is the newer 4.0L engines fire the spark plugs on both the compression and exhaust strokes, and the spark alternates directions on those two strokes.

The 3.73 is the axle ratio. That means the driveshaft spins 3.73 times for every single revolution of the axle shaft that drives the wheel. The higher that number, the lower the ratio... i.e. 3.73 is a lower ratio than 3.07 is. The lower the axle ratio like 3.73, 4.10, 4.56, etc., the higher the engine RPMs will be which produces more power. With bigger tires you need more power via higher engine RPMs so when we install significantly larger tires, we install lower ratio gears into our axles that make that happen. :)

The "Sahara" and "X" are just how the factory packages the TJ's.

Being an "X" owner, I can tell you for sure it will come with a 4.0 Inline 6, and the D35 rear axle. A D44 is preferred, but not even available in an X unless it is a special edition package, ie: Rocky Mt. Edition. A 33" tire is the max I would go on a D35. Mine must be a loaded X because it came with air, cruise, 7 speaker subwoofer stereo, and aluminum wheels.

Sahara's will come with wider, painted fender flares. The most important difference, IMO, is that a Sahara could have the optional D44 in it.

Great help guys. I've learned a lot from this thread. The 03 sahara I mentioned has a rear D44 axle. Might be the difference maker Dave!

The presence of the rear D44 in the Sahara would tip the scales in that direction for me. I would however get rid of the Sahara's K&N & go back to a factory air intake. K&N air filters are little better at filtering the dirt out than a screen door is in a dust storm. Having run a K&N, I was shocked how much of my local desert dirt & dust it was letting in. Really. I went back to the factory air intake & installed an AC-Delco air filter & couldn't be happier with that decision. :)

the sahara comes with the 4.0 I6 dana 44, upgraded speakers, body painted fender flares, 30 inch tires, nicer seats and shara stickers (WOOO) lol is the X a 6 or 4 cylinder? i would say the sahara based on miles but i personally don't like buying other peoples projects i.e. lifts CAI, stuff like that but if it's clean and is relatively rust free underneath on the important parts id go for it you will have more funn

just because it's an X doesnt not automatically mean it has a 6 cylinder x's came with 4s as well the 6 was an option

And just because it is a Sahara doesn't necessarily mean it has the optional Dana 44 rear axle either. :)

No you are incorrect. All x optioned wranglers came with 6 cylinders. The only 4 cylinder jeeps were se trim level. An x means that you have the 4.0 and a d35. Sahara's could be optioned to have a d44 rear.
