Dissapointed by smitty built

My parents bought me a brand new set of rock crawler smitty built seats for my graduation gift a little over a year and a half ago. i got brand new front seats that came with a matching back seat cover. in this small amount of time that i had them my passenger side recliner gear stripped out, the front seats fabric has started to fade and fray, and my back seat cover is starting to turn my friends butts red with a flakey fading fabric. also the whole top of the back seat cover ripped open from just highway winds... you could say that it would be common since i have my top off in the summer but i hardly ever use my passenger seats and these seats are made for jeeps so shouldn't the fabric be made to handle soft top, partial top, to no top conditions. my original 89' factory seats have aged better over the last 20 years than these smitty builts have over 1.5 years. anyone else have this problem??? makes me mad that my parents spent so much of their hard earned money on some nice looking seats for me. and the seats aren't even durable. smitty built will be getting an email from me very soon.

You aren't the first person to be disappointed by smittybuilt. I've never bought one of their products, and I never will. They are clearly a low quality brand. I'd recommend avoiding their products

I got the side tube steps on when i bought the jeep, not pleased at all paints flaking and rusting bad people have mixed reviews on there products kinda hit and miss

My smitty built seats fell apart, and they told me it was normal wear and tear, and it happened within a year. I would never buy there seats again. I do have there fenders though, and they have held up good.

I've only bought one thing made by Smittybuilt. That was enough to keep from ever spending money on their crap again.

I have never been disappointed by smittybilt. Got their bumpers, nerf bars, center console and all are great product and still in great shape to this day. I must be one of the lucky ones to always receive their good batch of products.

Remember anything that's a 10 will cost you big money… LOL

I have two of their tow hooks on my front bumper, installed March 2012. The hardware is already rusted up and like other's have said, the powder coating is already coming off them and the hooks are starting to rust. Won't buy any of their products again. Also stay away from their bumpers! I hear they are complete garbage!

Good to know.

Same report from me on bumper and fender flares... although I did modify the flares a little by replacing the screws that used plastic button covers with chrome hex-head screws / washer... looks a lot better.

It took me 2 items to realize that Smitty was total junk. First seat covers then a battery tray that didn't fit worth a dam.

seems like their stuff is hit or miss. I have a set of their roll bar grab handles that are about as good as any. had their security console for a little over a year and have had to repaint it but the tuffy console is around 300 so I really didn't mind.
have friends that have had their winches for years with no complaints, and another with their air compressor, he does roadside service, uses it daily with no problems.

It really depends on the particular product. After I warranted 6 of their (JUNK) grab handles that broke every time we used them, I finally spent the money to buy some that didn't suck!

Make some out of para cord

xjdreaming 02-13-2013 08:59 PM

So no to the bumpers then?

Gunz n tractorz 02-13-2013 09:03 PM

What about rugged ridge bumpers?

you have to paint the bolts

BDK 02-14-2013 12:51 AM

I have one of their bumpers and it is great. Still looks new after 2yrs. Like everyone says its hit or miss. Sometimes you can't afford the Metalcloak or Genright.

They were already painted black, but when torquing them on it stripped it in a few spots now they are nothing but rust. I'm just gonna wind up getting some stainless steel bolts.
