axle shaft
 
Hi all my ? is If the front locker on my rubicon is still engaged will it not let me pull the driver side inner axle shaft out ? I broke the ears off both axle shafts and have everything removed but i cant get the inner shaft out. 2005 tj thanks

Having the locker engaged won't prevent you from removing the axle shaft. Most likely the splines twisted or the shaft got a bit bound up in the side gear due to the break. Your just going to have to give it some force.

thanks for the reply just got it out with a bud and two bars. the axle shaft splines look good but sure seems like some metal is in the diff lube. and i just changed 18000 miles ago what due you think?

Every time I have changed my fluid I have found metal on my fill plug magnet. Some metal is gonna be normal. However, in your case, I would drain the diff and clean it well...a fluid change is cheap.

If it is fine metal you're probably ok. If its chunky completely disassemble everything till you find it

Think I will let it go for now and when my new shafts come in, install and test operation. Hope the new one goes in smoth

What shafts will you replace them with? I hope you're going with something that is hardened Chromolly alloy and not just another unhardened carbon steel shaft like the factory installed. If they are in stock, you can't beat Superior Axle's Discovery shafts that are pretty much the equal to the currently unavailable Evolution shafts. :)

I was going to go with the hardened alloy and even looked at RCV, then decided to get the dana spicier at this time. Due to the fact that i only worked on the driver side. I do plan on upgrading down the road then keep these shafts for trail spares. Plus the whole what will be the next weakest link in the drive train after the upgrade has me worried. And was able to get my wife back on the road for 199.95 If the install goes good.

I got Dana Spicer part # 5083667AA I don't think these are hardened?

That is the unhardened carbon steel OE replacement axle shaft made for a Rubicon.

Just thought they would make good trail spares when i upgrade. when i did get that inner axle out it had a round plastic ring with 8 notchs on the inside any idea what it is?

The plastic ring that fits closely to the axle tube on the outside? That just keeps big pieces of debris/rocks/etc. out of the axle tubes which are open on the end. They aren't sealed until all the way in where the axle shafts enter the differential case.

And yes that is a good plan to use what you're buying as spares when you get the hardened shafts. :)

I know the ring you just described but this other plastic ring looks like a inside out sprocket,is only about a 8th" thick, was white and came out from inside the axle tube it is a little bigger than the shaft.

Plastic? I don't recall ever seeing anything like that, perhaps it is used during the manufacturing process to protect the shafts when they are being inserted.

Now that you say that, it maybe a guide so when the axle saft is inserted into the tube it holds it up, so it doesn't slide along the bottom and get the splines full of dirt?

That piece of plastic is there for assembly to center the axle into the seal to avoid damaging the seal. I reuse them if they're on the axle.

Thanks that makes a lot of sense to me, i will reuse it THANKS again I will let everyone how things turn out. the shafts will be here tomorrow.
