Towing question.

I am taking a road trip this summer. I want to take the jeep it will be about 1500 miles round trip. However We want to be able to bring our motorcycles. one weights about 700 and the other other about just under 800. Then we will have a very small utility trailer just big enough to get the two bikes on. Plus out luggage and two passengers.

The jeep is a 2004 I6 auto. I think the towing rating is about 2k. Which I think this would put me right at the limit. I am going to install a tranny cooler.

So whats your opinions? Its not a huge deal if you guys advise against taking the jeep I do have a f350 v10 which is my towing rig . I would just prefer to take the jeep if possible.

Should be no problem providing you have the trailer loaded properly so you get sufficient tongue weight. If the loaded trailer weighs 2000 lbs, then you need to have the motorcycles positioned to provide 200 lbs of tongue weight on the hitch ball to prevent trailer sway. I have done a lot of towing with that combination and it does fine, I only advise you disengage Overdrive when you're on even a minor grade.

Assuming your Jeep is a SWB, you're right: its max tow rating is 2000 pounds. However, make sure you also do not exceed your Jeep's GCWR (total weight of Jeep + passengers/cargo + trailer). The GCWR is printed on the driver's door jamb decal, and is probably about 6000 pounds.

Throw the toys in the back of the truck and flat tow the Jeep! :thumb:

i towed 2 bikes on a trailer on vacation with my old TJ. it was a 2.5L. i just took my time. we only had 2 bags for luggage & the bikes. our trip wasn't as long, but it went about 500-600 miles round trip with no problems.
