Winch type, wire or synthetic rope???

I have my new bumpers coming and a winch plate but I'm just not sure about the advantage of wire over rope. The flexibility of synthetic is a good idea but what about the overall longevity?

Need some input so I can order a winch.

Thanks...

Go 3/8" synthetic. I replaced my first winch's wire rope twice in its first 5-6 years due to kinks & broken wire strands before deciding to switch to synthetic. That synthetic rope was fine its first 5 years until the TJ it was on was stolen. I'm running synthetic again on my replacement winch and Jeep and am very happy with its characteristics.

Thor at www.vikingoffroad.com is who I got mine from. Good guy & an active Jeeper.

My vote goes to synthetic; looking to replace my worn steel cable in the next month or so with a 3/8" rope with a Safety Thimble from Viking like Jerry recommended above. The safety benefits are reason enough for me.

Just a point of information that WF member Blaine Johnson aka Black Magic Brakes is the developer of the Safety Thimble. :)

I say synthetic, wire has not failed me yet but man have you tried to use the stupid thing in the middle of winter? It gets so stiff and impossible to work with. Also it's rusting away and on top of that I've kinked it 2 times now just trying to work with it. Wire will work but holy crap it's frustrating to deal with. Never had synthetic but it seem like it'd be better. Just can't drag it through rocks and such like you can with wire haha
