Rear Engine Gasket leak?
 
I read around here about a rear gasket leak common on the TJs. I was working on unrelated things when I came across this.

Is that the common leak? And if so how do I fix it?

Also, there's supposed to be a bolt there in the middle correct?

Yep it is a common 4.0 problem. It requires a rear main seal replacement as long as it is not coming from the valve cover and dripping down. There are lots of write ups on how to do it, but check out Stu's site as it is one of the best.

Thanks, that's what I thought. I'll look for the write up tomorrow, the android search is crappy at best.

When you say the valve cover, would that be the cylinder head cover?

Yes the valve cover is also known as the cylinder head cover. If you are going to put a new gasket on it I would suggest not buying a replacement gasket, but getting a silcone gasket maker. They are cheaper then factory gasket material and you can put a good amount on. The stuff I use at my shop is called The Right Stuff by Permatex, a little bit pricier than most but as with anything you get what you pay for.

Thanks for the heads up andrew127.

I looked around, or should I say climbed around, my engine and it seems the valve cover is the culprit at this point. There's plenty or "moisture" around the edge, especially in the back. I'm gonna try to re-torque the bolts today to see if that helps. If not I'll gasket it at my earliest convenience.

Yup, I agree 100% - I ended up replacing both on my 4.0. I started with the rear seal and then I did the valve cover. It's not to hard if you have the right tools, some help, and time. (my youngest son was extremely helpful and really did most of the work)
