Tire questions?

I have a 99 wrangler sport with 31x10.5 tires basically pretty stock otherwise. So I have a couple questions?

Found out that my spare was a differant size them my drive tires. The drive tires are 31x10.5 BFG Baja. I replaced the spare with a diffeant brand 31x10.5. Does the spare need to be the same brand a make or just the same zize to be a spare.

Second question is what can I do for a tire carrier as the stock mount on the door one a little tight. Is tehre a way to do a somple mod to the standard tire care without replacing the whole rear bumper with a oversize carrier.

As long as the tires are the same size you are good to go! They don't need to be the same brand.

As for modding the stock tire carrier for a 31x10.5 there are a couple ways to do it.

1. You can cut/shave down the rubber bumpers that the tire rest against. FREE.

2. You can buy a different tire mount like the factory one that pushes the mounting surface out farther. ...such as this, exp....Olympic 4x4 Products 707-401 - Olympic 4X4 Products Heavy Duty Tire Carrier for 76-06 Jeep® CJ-5, CJ-7, Wrangler YJ, TJ, Unlimited & Cherokee XJ - Quadratec

3. An after market bumper with a tire carrier.

4. An after market body mount tire carrier. Such as this....,exp,.... Bestop 61960-01 - HighRock 4x4™ Oversize Tire Carrier for 87-06 Jeep® Wrangler YJ, TJ & Unlimited - Quadratec

with a 31" tire you shouldn't have to do anything with the stock tire carrier. if you go upto a 32 or 33" tire you should then need to look at n adapter for the tire.

Depends on what backspacing his wheels are. They can smash the bumpers into the tire pretty good with some wheels. And yes it will weaken the sidewall over time.

a 31x10.5 will fit, anything wider might have an issue. my friend was able to fit a 32x11.5 with just enough room. a 33" tire or a tire wider will need a spacer ot new carrier

Yes it will fit. Never said it didn't. What I said and he is probably referring to is when the tire is tighten down to the carrier it is a little too tight. Pushing the tire onto the rubber bumpers too hard. There are different backspacing and types of factory wheels that have up to 5.25'' of backspacing.

Here is an example. My jeep when I bought it with a factory wheel 15x8 with 5.25'' backspacing and a 31.10.5 tire.

Here is what it did to the tire......

You can see where the rubber bumpers pressed into the tire. As a result the tire is now CRAP. :crash:I mounted it to the jeep and set it on the ground and the side wall bubbles out in those locations and is very thin.
