Need transfer case help!

Ok first off I have a 1997 Sahara auto with 4.0. Questions are, which transfer case do I have? Next 4wd still works, just makes noise, so would it be cheaper to replace it completely or to rebuild it? Thanks for all the help fellas!

You have the NV231 providing its still the stock t-case

What kinda noise is it making? Have you changed the fluid lately? You may have old fluid or dirt or metal shaving in there which will eventually ruin the t-case if you don't fix it.

You have a 231 t-case which is usually identified as an NP-231 or NV-231 depending on the year... with the NP-231 and NV-231 being the same... just different owner names of the same product.

Replacing it with a used replacement is a crapshoot since if you don't know its condition, the replacement transfer case might be bad too. I might be tempted if you can receive assurances the used t-case is in good condition. Caution the replacement t-case would have to come from a '97-99 TJ with an automatic transmission and 4.0L engine so it will have the right length & spline count input shaft.

Personally, I'd probably buy a new chain & rebuild kit & rebuild it. Such kits are out there, I believe Advance Adapters and JB Conversions may have such a kit.

The noise is loud and violent sounding, it almost sounds like something slipping then catching. A clunk noise. I just got the jeep and have no idea about the fluid.

Yeah. I'm no transfer case expert but I'd say you need to look inside that or get someone else too. You're most likely gonna need to rebuild it as Jerry B suggested. Sounds like you have some broken gear teeth possibly.

That's the weird part about it, I would think if it was gear teeth it would be a consistent clunk, the clunk I'm experiencing is sporadic.

That is a good point. But either way you're gonna need to open it up and look to see what's messed up in it and see what you need to do from there

Definitely, appreciate all the help fellas!
