newbie intro. Hello from ouray Colorado

Hey guys and gals,

I have been wanting a jeep wrangler my entire life and finally think the time has come. My wife and I live in ouray colorado in the summers and have been hoping to win that jeep raffle for the last 6 years. Finally realizing the unlikelihood if this happening we are searching for a good budget wrangler that can keep us entertained on the trails.

Any suggestions for years? My father in law has a 1989 he is looking to sell in great condition and only 50k miles. It's a 5speed 4.2l 6cyl but not sure which transmission. My only concern is that it is that it is carbureted and will struggle on most trails above treeline. We live and will keep the jeep at 9000ft.

We are looking to spend under 6000 and just looking for a good running nothing fancy wrangler. I know once we get started it will be addicting and I'm sure I'll want to add on and upgrade.

Any suggestions for a good year/model/ or things to look for wood be awesome. I know people have biases for 6cyl vs. 4 and certain transmissions etc. We are open to hearing whatever anybody has to share.

Thanks all for letting me join and we look forward to our first wrangler purchase and many great conversations on this forum.

Happy trails

Aaron

Welcome to the forum!

You might be able to find an older TJ with an I6 for that price. It would have high miles, but nothing that the I6 cant handle

Welcome to the forum!!! The 89 iis a temting machine and can be easilly fixed and tuned to run at altitude although I am a little partial to the YJ.

For your price range, you're probably looking at a YJ (87-96) or early TJ (97-06). The JKs (07-13) are still pricey.

Welcome Aaron! I had an '87 YJ with that 4.2 and it's a wonderful engine. The only problems I ever encountered related to the carb was on VERY steep rock climbs... I don't think you would find many places in the Ouray area that would cause problems. Those old carbed Jeeps will run better if you advance your timing for the altitude. They really do run just fine up there with the noted exception.

Great places to wheel around Ouray and wonderful railroad history! We were the first campground hosts in Yankee Boy Basin when the USFS and the YBRCA got together about 11 years ago, and our old Jeep club from Denver (Mile-Hi Jeep Club) spends a week in Silverton every 3 or 4 years with an event called All-4-Fun. I even went to school in Omaha with a kid that was son of one of Ouray's former mayors... Bill Fries... better known as CW McCall of "Convoy", and "Wolf Creek Pass" music fame. We love the Silverton/Ouray/Telluride area. That "Switzerland of America" area is tough to beat!
