Third Brake Light Required in Florida?

This came up in another thread and I didn't know the answer so I thought I would ask in the Florida forum. Is the third brake light legally required in Florida?

I came across this thread, but it didn't seem to address the third brake light issue: http://www.wranglerforum.com/f71/flo...ws-220931.html

I'd like to remove or maybe replace the third brake light with something else, maybe something like the Delta lug nut lights, but I'm not sure it would be a legal replacement: Delta Tech 01-6581-50 - Delta Waterproof Lug Nut Light for Aftermarket Swing Spare Tire - Quadratec

To my knowledge it is a Federal law not a State law.

That's interesting. Someone claimed it wasn't required in Texas, but then i guess Texas does claim independence from the rest of the country.

Just to clear this up. Florida requires by statute, TWO working brake lights. The lights must be red in color and visible from 300 feet during the day time.

Hope this helps.

I removed my third brake light about a year ago and I haven't had any issues or been stopped for it. eventually I'd like to do the lug nuts or something else inside the spare mount but... that's way off in the distance.

my 3rd light has been out for atleast 3 months, i'll fix it eventually, haven't been stopped yet.

My YJ or TJ don't have 3rd brake lights.
And thats been 2.5 years without one.

Good friend of mine is a deputy in the sheriffs department in Hillsborough county. He said only 2 working lights are required.

YES YOU CAN! Just did it last night! lol

Florida requires this:
Lights:

Your car must have the following lights:
  • Bright (high-beam) headlights which show objects 450 feet ahead.
  • Dimmed (low-beam) headlights which show objects 150 feet ahead.
  • Two red taillights mounted on the rear, visible from 1,000 feet.
  • A white light that makes the license plate visible from 50 feet (The plate must be kept clean).
  • Two red stoplights. They must be seen from 300 feet in the daytime, and must come on when the foot brake is pressed.
(source: State of Florida.com - Vehicle Guide)

As a side note, this must have been changed recently, you only need 1 rear facing mirror ("Mirrors: Your car must have at least one rearview mirror which gives a view of the highway at least 200 feet to the rear.", same source).
That means you can remove the doors with NO side mirrors as long as your windshield mirror is intact. I bought my Jeep in Oct of 1994 (1995 model). At that time, FL statute stated 2 rear facing mirrors, guess its 1 now! lol)

Hope this helps! :punk:

Good info, I want to take my spare off since it is to small anyways, but did not want to keep the 3rd light.
