Will be going to Beatty in a few weekends and am wondering if there are any good trails in that area? Am looking for trails that go to ghostowns or geological features of some kind. Not looking for anything in DV. Will be doing Echo canyon on the way out and as for Titus, been there done that.
Is Titus Canyon Open?
A few months ago there was a sign saying it was closed.
You never know what those signs mean. Will they send black helicopers and a S.W.A.T. team to haul you to jail? Is it just not recommended for small sedans and you'll get billed if they have to rescue you? Are the eco-elites just trying to keep out the riff raff?
Last year off 95 there was a sign saying the road was closed to Scotty's Castle. There were a couple of old washouts that an old frame sedan could have handled. Right at Scotty's Castle the road was blocked but you could access the historic site itself - from either end! I just putted through the parking lot around the sawhorses and continued down the road into Death Valley. No pay kiosk at the castle, nobody stopped me at the north Ranger station for coming from the "closed" road (I could have been coming from the Race Track).
Echo Canyon Near Silver Peak town?
My favorite hot spring is Fish Lake Valley north of Dyer (got a 4.0 yesterday). There's a rough road there the back way from Silver Peak town.
Check out Gold Point south of Dyer between Lida and Lida Jct. Some people still live there so I'm not sure you'd call it a "ghost" town - sort of like Goldfield but off the asphalt a way. Supposedly there's a road west of there to a great viewpoint of Death Valley I'd love to check out sometime.
I'm still interested in doing a loop of Fleur de Lis Rd and Boiling Pot Road around no name mountain north of Beatty some time. They're probably just graded gravel roads but I'm curious.
Or do you mean Echo Canyon near Overton "on the way" to Beatty?
Titus canyon was open, usually depends on the snow level. Like I said, been there done that.
The echo canyon we are doing is located somewhere around here:
Furnace Creek, Inyo, California - Google Maps
Thanks for the other tips. If we make to 'em will let ya know.
