Fitting TJ seats into YJ - Build

Stock YJ seats suck to say the least, especially when they are 20 years old. They are hard as rocks and do not offer head support to taller folks. However when Jeep released the TJ's they have tall seats with great head support that are soft, squishy, and NEWish!!

When I was looking into doing this, it seemed like there were no straight forward ways do do this, it was a very vague topic.

So here we go, laid out, explained, with pictures!

Taking out the old YJ seat reveals the contours of the floorboard that the TJ seat bracket does not accomidate.

Notice the curve of the YJ Bracket, and the straightness of the TJ bracket.

Now I did try fitting the TJ bracket into the YJ to see if there was any possible way to allow it to fit, and the only way to have a completely flat surface had the side of the seat sticking well outside of the door frame.

So in order to make this work, I had to mount the TJ seat onto the YJ bracket.

Removing The TJ and YJ brackets from the seats.

Removing the TJ seat bracket!

Having the seat off and laid down on the shop floor, it's ready to be disassembled.
It was time to get out the drill, The TJ seat is mounted to the bracket with 6 heavy duty rivets.

Attachment 213760

Simply drill out the head of each rivet, give them a whack with a flat-head and a hammer, and next thing you know, the bracket is off. (Trust me, its a bit more painstaking than it sounds)

Removing the YJ seat bracket!

The YJ seat bracket is held on with 4 Torx screws, fairly straight forward.
Lefty-loosy, righty-tighty!

Attachment 213762

Note: When the YJ bracket is off, lightly lube it up while you have the chance, however be careful when sliding the slider. If both sliders do not slide at the same rate, things get a little twisted up, and it can fall apart.

Just wait, I finished everything up tonight and I will finish the write up tomorrow. It was a fairly easy task!!

Seems pretty straightforward. I've been wanting to do this too, but looking forward to the final result. I'd like to see if there's any height difference with the seats, even though you used the YJ bracket. Subb'd.

Subd. Even the cavalier seats I am finding are old and worn out. TJ may be the way to go. Also interested in the height difference. Have a bestop drivers seat and it cut it down to 5.5" between seat and steering wheel. Stupid fat legs:banghead:

There's a height difference of a solid inch higher. If anything, it feels better being a bit higher up, being 6'2", i still have head clearance to my soft top.

Although TJ seats are slightly wider, and if your YJ console is tight against the YJ seats as is, look into purchasing a skinnier console. Because it wont fit.

what ever happened? I just bought a set of TJ seats.

Hey I'm curious as to how this turned out since you said it was pretty easy. I'd really like to try this, I loved my old TJ seats.
