Parking brake adjustment??
 
Is there a way to adjust the parking brake, mine feels like it just pulls straight up with ease, but i did count the clicks it hits 10 clicks b4 it stops. And with my big tires and wheels, if its on a slights hill it will roll back if the parking brake isnt all the way at the top.

Yes sir, very easy, tighten the nut in the middle of the picture (not much though).. This will tighten your hand brake. Basically turn the nut once or twice and run inside and check it out. If it needs more, turn it some more, run inside and check it out. Dont tighten it 40 turns on the first time :). (the bolt is right above the rear driveshaft)

how do u do that? i understand the brake cable part. Im just at aw that my 04 has drums instead of rotors. Whos idea was the drums? what years did they stop with drums and do rotors if anyone knows

I believe the only TJs with rear discs are the Rubicons and Unlimiteds

BUT.............. they still use shoes for the parking brake....

don't mess with the cable adjustment like whats his name said UNTIL you adjust the shoes FIRST.

dont actually have to take apart the whole drum assembly correct? i just use the bottom of the page instructions?

I bought a '95 Wrangler, 4.0 L. I pull a 20 fiberglass boat with it and my boat ramp i use is fairly steep so I need a good parking brake. Your posts helped me tightnen everything up and I'm now able to set things fiemly. I did you cable fix and replaced the shoes.

i don't have a TJ, but there are no comments in the JK forum...i bought mine...got it home (200km later) to find out that the parking brake only grabbed at the very top...after an angry phone call back to the dealership...i took it to a local dealership...the brake is rather important as my driveway is on an incline...80 bux later...top notch! well not literally, now its the middle notch!

this is something i probably would have tried to tackle myself had it been warm and no snow..but talk about a pain in the ass way of trying to adjust the parking brake

Two questions:

1. Is it safe to assume that tightening the nut (i.e., turning it clockwise) will likewise tighten the hand brake?

2. Your nut&bolt are pristine! Mine are both rusted to hell. I'm worried about snapping something - any suggestions as to how to get around this problem...?

And an unrelated question:

I thought about adjusting the rear brake shoes by doing the adjusting star thing. Removed all three of the little rubber plugs on the back of the drum, but none of them appears to give access to the adjusting star? What am I missing...???

For TJ's with 4-wheel disc brakes the parking brake is a drum system inside your brake rotor. Adjust your parking brake by turning the star adjuster behind your wheels. This will push or pull the brake shoes so that they move away from, or towards the inside of the brake rotor.

The parking brake cable under the Jeep is set from the factory and should NOT be messed with.

Mine is a '98 TJ with drums in the back. I can't find the adjusting star in any of the three rubber-plugged slots on the back of the drum... help!

It'll be easier if you remove the tire/wheel after jacking it up and setting a jack stand. or you can crawl underneath with a flashlight and look in there. If you can't find the notches to adjust it, you may have found your problem. :) Or it may be full of dirt/mud, in which case you probably want to open it up and clean it out.

On my 98 the plug for the star is about 2-3 inches from the bottom of the drum almost on the center line of the drum. the plug is like and inch by 3/8 - 1/2 I think. You have to shine a light in to see it.

I think you guys have misunderstood -- I have no trouble finding the rubber plugs (3 of them, in fact) or removing them. I just don't feel the adjusting star. I've stuck a flat-blade screw driver in the bottom slot (yes, I understand that using a "brake adjusting tool" is the proper way to do it, but sometimes you gotta improvise, right?), and I've even looked inside (admittedly, not the best vantage point with the wheel still on), but I'm not seeing or feeling the star.

If you guys say that the star is in there, then I guess I'll remove the wheel and take another peek. Sigh...

Yup yup yup, its there. With a light you should see that the adjusting wheel teeth is slanted in one direction, that will also help you realize what direction to turn the adjusting wheel. When your done adjusting you should have a slight drag on the tire. Assuming you have your rig up on a jack and you can spin the tire. Then when done adjusting both sides you will find you do not need to adjust the parking brake and that your jeep stops a whole lot quicker.

Have you tried backing up and hitting the brakes a few times? Works on mine.

OK, so I took the impatient, cowardly way out -- I took off the wheel, removed the brake drum, located the adjusting star wheel, and made the adjustment by hand. Worked like a charm. Yeah, go ahead, I know you want to - call me a wuss! :-)

And, yes, it does stop a lot faster now. Woulda left my lip marks on the windshield if I hadn't been wearing my seat belt...

Naah...folks like me have worked on em so much, we know what it is and where to find it. Its good you took off the drum and saw it. Now you have first hand knowledge.

I think you need to adjust the brakes so that the are "barely" dragging in order to get the adjuster working. I adjusted mine to not dragging and the adjusters wont adjust.

Hmmmm.... and I thought they just dont work so good. And you can know when your parking brake has to be pulled more than 1/2 way up.

I didnt adjust mine correctly and I need to pull over 1/2 to get it work, but still better than before.
I think you need adjust them so that they slight dragging but you still be able to turn the wheels using hands, and as long as you stop the tires shouldnt rotate more than one turn.

Parking brake adjustment.
 
I have always had problems with my TJ's parking brake, and since I got 33" tires the brake does nothing and the handle comes all the way up. I even tried to get the stealership to fix the parking brake and they said there was nothing wrong with it!!!:eek:
I've been reading all I could about adjusting my parking brakes on my 2003 TJ with 4 wheel disc brakes. I couldn't figure out what I was doing wrong.
I just assumed that the star adjustment was horizontally positioned and that I would move the brake spoon sideways to adjust.:banghead:
I just found a drawing that shows the adjustment star is actually vertical and I should be moving the brake tool so that the handle goes up to tighten!:facepalm:
