taking full doors off

Just got the jeep 3 weeks ago and got some mirrors so I can get the doors off. I have tried to pull them straight up, tried putting some wd-40 for lube, even tried a rubber mallet and screw driver.
Anyone got a easy solution to taking doors off?

Not being an arse hole here, but you did take the nuts off the bottom of the posts right?

The first time you take them off you might need to coerce them with more than just your self. Make sure however that you are lifting straight up on them or they will not want to come off at all.

There is no easy solution, especially it they have never been off. Try putting one of the nuts back on, and hitting it with a real hammer............that is what it took to get mine off. Once you get them off, sand the rust off the door pins, and put some axle grease on the door pins, and hinges, to make it much easier for the next time.

Also move the door back and forth, as you lift straight up.

all nuts have been removed, I had two strong people lifting up, the top looked like it was starting but the bottom is sticking. I think I will try again in the moring after the wd40 soaks in. I just did not feel like breaking something....

There's some lube called... PB Blaster, I think. I'm trying to remember the name. If you use that and can't get them off, get a torch.

The PB Blaster stuff that Jepper is talking about will work much much better for you than WD40 will.

Good Luck.

Here is a tip. Put painter's masking tape on the body and doors around the hinges as you try to remove the doors. That way when the door lets go you don't scratch the paint on the surrounding area.

It took Hi Lift under the door near hinges with door open aboout 45 degrees the first time for me. After that, no problem. Just be careful, they are heavier than you think. If you use a Hi Lift, make sure you pad the bottom of the door with something. I used a soft piece of wood.

you thought that was bad, the 2 nuts on the pass. side bolts for the door on mine sheared right off with little pressure on the wrench! needless to say i've been talking back and forth with the dealership about that one... and the doors still havent come off... whats this talk about mirrors?

this is exactly what I have done on a few first time doorless wannabe's
works a treat.. just be sure your ready for them to pop out.
could result in paint damage if your not careful.

or you could get whacked in the head :)

Hey guys. This is my first post here. I'm trying to do the same thing to my wife's 03. Another question I have, is what do I do to keep the interior lights off after I manage to get the doors out?

welcome to the WF

mrbigjeep 07-17-2006 01:37 PM

yes u can buy one of those for cheap...but if you have an owners manual check that...when i was taking my hardtop off it had a little side note that said if you are taking your doors off to pull one of the fuses to get the light to go off...a fuse in the dome box or something like that...im not sure which one...maybe ill check in a while and let ya know

troymach1one 07-17-2006 02:17 PM

The fuse box behind the glovebox is what you are looking for, and pull the 10 amp fuse for interior lighting.

As far as taking off the doors all you need to do is move them in and out while pulling up on them.

mrbigjeep 07-17-2006 02:48 PM

well thanks...now i dont gotta go look in my owners manual to let him know

iron_city_ap 07-20-2006 06:04 PM

Thanks for the responses/tips. I like the clip idea, just because she will still be able to turn on the interior light with the doors off instead of being SOL. What size clip is that anyhow, just so I can hit the local Fastenall and pick up a set of stainless bolts and the clamps at the same time (assuming they have both).

bluvikng 07-20-2006 06:10 PM

This is where you find the clips, or one location, anyway.

You need to pull the #4 fuse (behind the glove box) and that will turn the interior lights off. Keep in mind you'll lose your interior lights and your headlight "on" warning beep too.

when i got my jeep, the previous owner pulled out the door buttons, so they sit nice and neat in my center console lol
