too overpowered? help me out

hey guys so im in the midst of putting together and complete sound system for my 06 wrangler. it has the 7 speaker system stock which is pretty good but i want more... i plan on replacing the front stock comppnents with jl audio c2 5-1/4 full range speakers, the same speakers for the sound pods, amplified by a 4 channel jl audio 360 watt amp and 2 12 inch west coast custom subwoofeers in the rear powered by an 800 watt WCC amp. with a kenwood excelon kfcx595 that has 3 sets or 4 watt pre amps. my question to you is do you think it will be too much? im fighting notions of keeping everything stock or just upgrading the speakers or going to whole 9 yards with the system. in recent days ive been driving around with the volume on 20 ( the level before the speakers really get to be harsh) and it sounds great but i don't think that with the top off and windows open (or doors off) it will be sufficent. does anyone have any helpful experience with this stuff and expierence with the 7 speaker system in the summer time? thanks in advance

mike25 03-01-2013 03:10 PM

also do i have to dynamat anything for rattles???

rketr 03-01-2013 04:09 PM

Hmmm...Dynamat is probably overkill. It's a Jeep. Everything rattles, but the un-muffled exterior sounds usually drown all that out.

I wouldn't go with 2 12" in a jeep. Especially for something that lacks sound quality. A proper enclosure for those subs would eat all your interior space. Also, be careful of amp pull from the small factory battery and small alternator. I would stick with (at most) 1 high quality sub, perhaps a Jl 10w7.... Push it with a quality 500 watt amp and replace the sound pod speakers the c2's are nice.

I have 2 8w7's in my jeep and 1 12w7 in my range rover. Both sound great and are louder than I'd ever care to play them.

Then again, 2 12's could be louder, but I can't imagine they will sound good at all. Good luck! I'm sure it will end up great.

the reason why i'm going with the 2 12s is becasue i already have them i took them from my last car. i also have a golden eagle package does that make any difference with the battery and alternator??

Shark_13 03-01-2013 08:01 PM

I say go for it!
Mine just needed a good tuning and the mediocre parts the prev owner installed actually sounds decent. I am adding some better fronts, deadening, and redoing sub under rear seat.

Just because it is a Jeep doesn't mean it has to sound terrible and rattly.

Sshunter2022 03-01-2013 08:14 PM

I'd go for it! I'm working on building my system right now as well, just replaced all the factory speakers and my next step is the sub. I'm only doing one 12" shallow mount sub behind the rear seat. Let me kno how the 2 sound I might have to upgrade

mike25 03-03-2013 12:32 PM

will do ill keep you guys posted i just ordered the speakers and brackets from nalin, ive gotta wait for my next paycheck and ill grab the head unit and amp, then once my tax refund comes in everything will be going in, the only thing that worries me is the 2 12s because i hade them in a nice box but the box wouldnt quite fit in the trunk behind the rear seats so i cut about 3 inches off the back of the box and put the 3/4 inch mpf board back on with some caulking and screws....hopefully it's enough lol

Motowithy 03-03-2013 12:43 PM

I did the fatmat (dynamat alternative). It's about half the price. I did the entire tub and behind the door panels/dash. Makes a world of difference in removing road noise and enhancing the sound of your system. Best sound will be with hardtop and windows up obviously.

Spencer11496 03-03-2013 01:27 PM

I have the seven speaker system too. I replaced the dash with kicker 4x6 and the sound bar with kicker 5 1/4. Both are only like 25-30 watts rms. I got a kicker HU with 6 RCA outs and it pushes 22 watts rms to all my speakers. I replace the center console sub with a kicker 6.5 2 ohm CVT and powering it with only 50 watts rms. with the head unit tuned and everything turned up to about 30 I can go 70 down the bypass with the top a d doors of and hear everything. The only thing I want to add is a kicker l7 10" in a ported truck box behind the back seat with a matching amp. I plan on replacing my dash and sound bad speakers with better ones at a much later date and adding a 4 channel amp. But my current setup only cost me $100 for speakers $180 for HU $100 for sub and $40 for the amp. So for only like 500 bucks you can have a killer system, and I did my build in stages so I could afford it on a high school budget. It's really all in the tuning and matching the HU to the speakers.

jgorm 03-03-2013 03:41 PM

It doesn't sound like overkill at all. If you are adding 2 12w7s, that might be overkill.

haha yeah that would be overkill. nah the 2 12s i have are 400 watt max each so like 200 rms each. but the thing im excited about is that the factory 6.5 inch sub in the console will still play if i replace the headunit because it has a factory external amp which will help fill out the whole system and possibly down the road i might to the kicker 6.5 cvt swap for it

There is no such thing as too much. If you want it, do it but you may not be happy when you do whatever you do because its a jeep.

With the top off it isn't going to sound like the inside of a car no matter what you do.

Me,,,, I replaced the stock stereo with a pretty good Kenwood. I left the stock 7 speakers alone because they are still in good shape and I'm fully satisfied. It sounds nothing like the sound from my Dodge Ram or my wife's Acura MDX, but for my jeep,,, perfect.

Personally with space being limited in a jeep and with the potential to get pretty dirty, I wouldn't want any extra speakers (over the 7) or any amps under seats or anything like that. It may sound "better" with more but it isn't going to go from "this sux" to "this is awesome" in a jeep no matter what. IMO.

it seems you speak from experience but i have to respectfully (of course) disagree, if you have a go kart and you upgrade the sound system it's gunna sound better than before and as far as the top and doors being off im failrly confident the system im building will have more than enough power to sound excellent on the interstate.

If you already have them, then absolutely go for it! It will cost you nothing to try it (assuming you install it yourself). I'm sure many people here assumed you where going out to buy the stereo components specifically for this install.

Best of luck. Also, I have no idea about the golden arrow package. It sounds like the system is not incredibly powerful/power hungry so just watch your battery gauge I. The car! Best of luck and let us know how it works out and sounds!

mike25 03-05-2013 02:23 PM

i have 50% of what i need i have the amp and head unit and subs i just need to buy amp wiring kit the speakers and the other amp

Ever been to a Metallica concert? Power, loud and excellent can coexist because it was an excellent show. I even bought the sound board recording of the show. But when I listen to it, (and love it) it still sounds like a live show, not a studio cut. That live vs. studio comparison is kinda like jeep vs. car. A jeep just isn't a vehicle suited for what I would consider premium sound but there is no doubt it will sound better, sound better is what I said :whistling:. Go for it man!

And it fits perfect right in the corner behind back seat

mike25 03-07-2013 09:28 AM

so the jl audio sepakers i wanted are backordered does anyone know of any good speakers not too bass heavy like alpine type r's because i will have subs for bass, i need something that is of high sound quality like jl audios. and NO but i wish ive been to a metallica concert, in contrast i saw motley crue not too long ago and they sounded horrible, then kiss came out and killed it.

Motowithy 03-07-2013 10:28 AM

Focals are outstanding for their mods and highs. I recently did the sky pod over the rear view mirror with 2 focal 4" speakers. I was blown away with the clarity considering it was a 4". Amazon ended up having them for the best price as well.

mike25 03-07-2013 10:34 AM

yeah ive heard focals are great im loking at focals or alpine type r's or infinti kappas

mike25 03-07-2013 10:35 AM

they will be powerd by a jl audio amp that pushes 70 watt rms to each speaker

Motowithy 03-07-2013 10:41 AM

I had the kappas and am running the alpine type s in my soundbar. Type r just has better woofer material. I honestly suggest the focal and if you do get them from amazon you can always send back if you don't like them.

mike25 03-07-2013 10:53 AM

well i ordered the jl audio c2's from sonicelectronix and there back ordered i payed 104 per set for 2 sets and the focals are 30 bucks more per set, the infinitys are 30 less per set and the type r's are 2 dollars less per set so in my mind the alpines look to be the most comparable plus the alpines use a silk dome tweeter just like the jl's where as the focals use a metal tweeter, metal tweeters can get harsh on the ears. i think im going to go with the alpines for the simple fact that their the easiest swap right now. does anyone know, do you add the rms pushed from the head unit plus the rms from the amp to equal final power rating or is it just the amp? because my amp pushes 70 watt and headunit pushes 22 wats

Motowithy 03-07-2013 11:52 AM

Curious to see how you mount the two 12's. I've got two of the alpine r12's in my basement. Been using a 10" bazooka tube in the jeep because of space and ease to remove.

mike25 03-07-2013 12:31 PM

dude my 12's fit perfect i shaved 3 inches off the back of the box and it fits perfect behind the rear seats and the tailgate with the speakers facing the seats.

Nicely done!!! And good choice witness the c2's. focal makes amazing mids, but I don't care for their cheapest stuff at all. C2's sound better to me.

I can't wait to see pictures and hear what you think of the sound. Good work keeping that back seat!

mike25 03-08-2013 02:45 PM

Great news I found a set of c2 s on another site for the same price (104.97 per set) so I got the 2 sets now just waiting for the speakers and amp to come in. Then install time! It helps if you have a slanted box because obviously the back seats slant I shaved three inches and still have 2.5 to 3 inches of airspace for the subs not to mention wiggle room. Does anyone know can I mount the two amps under the rear seat?

Motowithy 03-08-2013 05:12 PM

I know a bunch of guys that run amps under the seat. Does the amp have any internal cooling, fan or anything otherwise it might overheat. Was thinking you might also wanna get a cap for the subs if it starts drawing too much power from the battery.
