Ball Joints and tie rods
 
I will be replacing my ball joints, There is play in all 4 of them and I finially have money to rebuild my front end.

What i am wondering is how can I tell If I need off set ball joints? I have seen these as a option and I want to be sure I don't Put new ones in and then get it up on the rack and need to change them to get my steering correct.

Later today I will list the parts i plan to use for the complete rebuild, I searched and couldn't come up with an easy answer for what to do.

I am also looking into the Rugged Ridge heavy duty steering kit. Should I do this or just do the ZJ? up grade on the linkage. I have also seen some other nice bolt in kits.

Any help would be much appreciated. Thank you guys.

I don't know how to tell about the offset balljoints but I'm sure you only need the regular ball joints. Here's a helpful link I used when I did my ball joints. D30 Ball Joint Replacement - 1

I would go for the Currie CurrectLync system. CURRIE CE-9701 CURRECTLYNC® - HD TIE ROD SYSTEM - Savvy Off Road Aluminum It's a better choice over the Rugged Ridge and ZJ upgrade. I installed it when I did my hubs and ball joints. And I'm sure most of the people on this forum would agree with the Currie system being better.

Also check all your important components when you put your jeep back together.

If you want to gain caster you would want offset ball joints, if you don't need the caster adjustment, or don't want to use offset ball joints to get it, then don't use them. I went with the Dana/spicer ball joints and I am perfectly happy with their construction and fitment.

These are the components I plan to use.

Rugged Ridge Heavy Duty Tie Rod Kit (this is also a cross over steering set up
part number 18050.82 from Morris 4x4

Energy Suspension Control Arm Bushing Kit Front
Part number 29024-03150822 from Parts Geek

Moog Ball Joints Full set left and right upper and lower
-these allow some camber and caster adjustment. Havent found where to get these yet at the cheapest price. Most likely Rock auto

Already have the Moog front track bar, plan to bring that in for the warrenty as it is lifetime.

What do you guys think Is this a smart set up? I want to remove all play in my steering and get it ready for an alignment prior to getting new tires.

I would probably avoid that steering setup. I have heard people say that that particular setup on a jeep has dead spots in the steering. I also believe the joints arent too good on it. If you've got the money, definitely go with the Currie setup. It is stout, and a great upgrade over stock. If you can't swing that much on steering right now. The ZJ upgrade is good too. It uses the same drag link as stock, but the tie rod is stronger and has bigger ends.

Also with 4.5" of lift, you arent using an adjustable track bar? Are you using a bracket instead?

I actually have some aftermarket draglink tube and I am going to see later today if it will fit the ZJ tie rod ends. I know it fits the threads for the gm 1 ton Tie rods but maybe I will luck out and not have to drill my knuckles out. All in all I do have to take the knuckles off to replace the ball joints and I have access to a drill press.

No I am not using an adjustable track bar. The Fab tec kit had a template on where to drill the new location hole in the stock bracket.

So I have decided to do the ZJ up grade. Now that part will be sufficient enough for what I do. I have decided that I do need to upgrade the other area that is doesn't cover. Has anyone found a sutiable replacement?

Also what are thoughs on Crown Ball joints opposed to Moog?
