Lookin for a rear Dana 44 for a yj

After I upgraded my shafts put in a lock rite locker my D35 ring a pinion crapped out. Does anyone have a D44 that'll work in the rear of my yj? I gave 4.56 gearing so I'm probably lookin at a regear so I'm not too worried about the gearing. Thanks
Ps: I have chromoly USA Alloy shafts for the d35 and a fully functional lock rite locker, I'm selling or perhaps trade

Do to ur 5x4.5 lug pattern ur best bet for as close to a direct swap is to grab a d44 out of an Xj....u'll have to cut off the spring purches and weld on new ones if ur Yj is still a spring under...they r hard to find but can be found...
Another axle that is a good candidate for ur Yj and very popular in the junkyards and alot stronger then it d35 is the 8" Chrysler from the Xj....it has the same lug pattern also
just sayin.

use a Scout or Waggy Dana 44 rear and have the pattern drilled out to 5 on 4.5

If they're 27 spline shafts I'm definitely interested. Just about to order a set. Already have the lock right.:thumb::thumb::thumb:

another thought is a Ford 8.8 I put one on my YJ. Rock solid and never lets me down. Less expensive and you may get disc brakes too.

minisaba 03-09-2013 07:51 PM

8.8 is a lot easier to find. Are you set on a d44?

^This^

Keep in mind that ( unless I'm mistaken ) the f8.8 is a C clip axle.

Ur axle is 60" wide ...a Scout II axle is at 62"/63" wide...and is good match for the front HP ford d44 out of a bronco or 150...
And all of these axles have the 5x5.5 lug pattern

minisaba 03-09-2013 10:19 PM

Even at that the 8.8 is still one of the best candidates for the yj since its found in almost all junk uards.. Being that the axle shafts are still stronger than the 44. I can't tell that my 8.8 is narrower than my front at all so thats not a deal breaker.

I'm not set on a 44 but I am a lil weary about the c clip in the 8.8. All the junkyards say negative in the d44. So if anyone can find one I would be greatly appreciative. Thanks for all the input!

The 8.8 is more Narrow than the 35?

Find one with discs and even if an axle snaps it'll never walk out.

Check out this link and work your way down to the Max Output Torque (MOT) ratings. The 31 splined version won't let you down.

If you're afraid you're gonna break an axle on an 8.8 then you're gonna break a 44 axle. If you're still afraid you might break either, buy a Superior chromo shaft set up with the c-clip eliminators for your 8.8 and you'll be just fine.

Otherwise you should be shopping one tons.

I have a Dana 44 rear with USA Alloy cromo axles (5x4.5 lug) and 4.88 gears, that I was thinking about selling. It has a Detroit locker that I will sell with or without. It also has disk brakes that I will sell with it or without it. Lots of options...:)

The best way to find an XJ Dana-44 is to go to your local U-Pull salvage yard frequently and keep an eye out for the XJ's with the factory bumper mounted trailer hitch. That was the type of hitch you would get with the factory towing package on the years that have Dana-44's. If you see that hitch, take a peak underneath. You may see a Dana-44 under there. I always look under all Jeeps but I'm just saying you could narrow your search.

It took me two years to find my Dana-44. I searched 2 different U-Pull yards biweekly. I finally saw a possible candidate in the prep/staging lot but couldn't get to it yet. I went back to that yard every other day until it was in the U-Pull section. It took me 15 minutes to unbolt everything and disconnect the parking brake cables even with the XJ sitting on the ground (no wheels, no stands yet, no jacks allowed) and then I had to wait (standing guard over my find) for another 30 minutes waiting for the forklift to come pick the XJ up so I could slide the axle out from underneath. I paid $60 for the '87 XJ Dana-44 w/3.54 gears and an additional $10 fork lift fee for them lifting the Cherokee.

That axle has been sitting in my shed for almost 3 years. One day I will get around to installing it. I do recommend trashing the XJ diff cover since it is really thin. I bought a much thicker cover from a 2001 Dodge 1500 front Dana-44 for $5.00 at the U-Pull.

Note: I did not go to the U-Pull just to search for that Dana-44. I also used to buy Isuzu Rodeo/Honda Passport Dana-44's, Ford 8.8's, and XJ 29-spline 8.25's to clean up and sell on craigslist for a tiny profit to help fund my Jeep YJ build.

Go on Craigslist and type in "Dana 44 Xj"...three or four will pop up from $300 to $550....
Or the Ecology on the 395 in Adelanto has 4 of them for $150.... but u'll have to pull it urself...

Sweet, thanx guys for all your help. I did find one near lax. The guy was asking 300$ but we settled on a fair 200$. It's actually gettin built up as I type. I needed to put 4.56 gearin in it and went with a spartan locker! Can't wait. If anyone is interested I have a Dana 35 with chromoly shafts, the heavy duty u bolt style yoke. And a lockrite locker, the break shoes were replaced less than 5,000 miles ago. I'm askin 400$ for the complete axle. The ring and pinion lost some teeth and needs to be replaced to match your gear ratio. If anyone is interested pm me or call 6612696495 Danny. Im located in palmdale 93552. Thanx again for all the help guys!!
