Picking out a new 2013...True Blue or Billet?!?!

Hey everyone, I've been daily driving a '99 Black TJ Sport for the past seven years and absolutely loved it. I just sold it and am now shopping for a new 2013 Wrangler. I'm planning on getting a base 2-door model sport manual everything w/ A/C, 3.73 gears, and a hardtop. It's my daily driver but I live on Cape Cod so it will be used for oversand beach trips and minor trails. I'm going to the dealer this weekend for the third time to finalize the numbers and to pick out or order my new Jeep exactly the way I want it.

Here is my dilemma: I am absolutely torn between true blue pearl coat and billet silver. I've been to the dealer twice this winter already and looked at both but both times there was still a lot of snow on everything.

I love the color blue but I'm concerned the true blue is a little too dark. I've also heard it looks almost purple. I certainly do not want to buy a purple Jeep. Also there is the obvious issues that come with all dark colors...scratches and dirt etc...I've seen it in person and I swear it changes colors everytime I see it, ranging from an awesome navy blue to a strange indigo/purple/almost black color.

The billet silver is a great looking color. Definitely wins in the maintenance/cleaning/scratch concern of the argument. But the silver almost looked bland and washed out next to the true blue when the light hit it correctly. I always thought silver vehicles were kind of "girly" looking. But this seems to be a bit of a darker silver. I know there is no wrong choice with either of these colors but someone else on this forum has to have gone through this issue. I keep my vehicles for an extremely long time and I don't want to regret whichever color I choose.

Thank you for any advice and comments ahead of time. Hopefully I didn't offend anyone who has purchased either of those colors. Can't wait to be back in a Jeep, this in between period of a few weeks is killing me!

I think the true blue is a bit boring. I love blue, but it's just too dark for my tastes. The billet is a nice silver and will hold up much better.

Miser 03-12-2013 06:08 PM

Black is my first choice, but between the two colors that you mentioned, I like Billet!
My suggestion to you is to not let us influence you on your color choice. If your buying a new one, then chances are that you will have it for a long time so get the color that you like the best. Remember, you are the one that has to look at it daily.......

I bought my mine in September when billet wasn't available. I love true blue, but it is almost too dark. I'm not a fan of silver either, but billet might have been just different enough to be my choice.

Billet. I had a 97 TJ that was pretty much the same color as True Blue. I liked it. Had a tan top. I love my billet every time I look at I know I made the right choice

I have '13 true blue and all said and done, I'd likely buy it again. I'm not so crazy about the dark look when not too bright out side. But when the sun hits it, wow... can't stop looking at it; so that was the seller for me. HOWEVER, now that I've seen the billet I might have to go with it. If for nothing else than having a greater selection of wheels that would go with this color.

On another note, I used to have an '04 TJ Columbia edition. it was Patriot Blue (same/same as true blue to me) but with graphite or Billet color fender flares. So I'd like to see what a set of Billet colored flares would looks like on the '13 true blue.

This but my wife loves true blue. That said do yourself a favor and look at billet in a couple of light conditions. The paint is darker when it is overcast, and a lighter grey in brighter light. http://i1352.photobucket.com/albums/...ps2513ad44.jpg

Love the true blue but the billet would probably hold up better over time. I went with cherry red and a black hardtop and am looking t change the wheels black, paint up the bumper covers (sahara) and clean it up a bit. In hindsight, would've gotten the matching color hardtop over black. Still, removing the silver and going two tone (black/red) will improve looks. Those are some nice pics above. Hey, I'm in Acton, MA. Don't forget the rabbit ear wave on your way by...

Casotakar1229 03-12-2013 09:54 PM

between just those two? hmmm.

billet would be my choice.

what's YOUR choice?

Mom2one 03-12-2013 09:55 PM

My vote would be for Billet! I wish they had that color when I got my jeep.

SullyRock71 03-12-2013 11:11 PM

I'd say True Blue because that's what I just picked up a week ago. It does seem to change colors at times depending on how the light hits it, but I like that there aren't a lot of them around. There are a lot more silver, black and white Jeeps around here than blues so I like being different. I do like Billet having seen it in person also, but I'd still do my True Blue again, especially since I have the Saddle interior with it. In the end it comes down to what YOU like!

jwilson2598 03-12-2013 11:20 PM

Just to throw a wrench in, if your planning on special ordering, the True Blue is not an option. Per Pat and others, they stopped taking orders recently and have built them out, or will soon.

Old Dogger 03-13-2013 12:38 AM

Go with True Blue, because it has that high gloss shine just like the Black one do..........

RubiconRon 03-13-2013 12:48 AM

I took the Billet.

I was considering the True Blue as well (though Cherry Red was my initial first choice), but ended up with Gecko instead. After I got the Gecko, I revisited with the blue and realized I didn't care for it as much because I didn't get the dynamic contrast between the blue and black bumper/fenders and top.

I would go for Billet to get the contrast and it's easier to keep clean. Blue is a bit dark towards the black which is a more common colour. Blue will show scratches more as well, so there is a bit more upkeep to keep it looking great.

80space 03-13-2013 06:10 AM

I was just at the dealer where they had a blue and billet rubicon sitting side by side and the morning sun was reflecting nicely off both. I would buy either one. If you go with blue, get the tan interior and painted top and fenders. The billet looks good with either a black top or painted. I think the billet would be easier to live with in the long run.

panthermark 03-13-2013 06:41 AM

Tough call...

I went with Billet...and it actually does look good with saddle interior.

I do like the way True Blue "pops" in the sun when clean. My only concern would be showing scratches and stuff. Someone at my job has a True Blue Freedom Edition....looks good.

It was a very tough choice for me as well and after the commando green turned out to be not at all what I hoped for I was left with deep cherry or true blue. Both look great with the dark saddle and leather however in the end true blue just did it for me.

My main reason for choosing the true blue was that it seems to be more rare. I see red, silver and black all over the place but hardly ever a true blue. I also did not like true blue as well with black fenders however with my Sahara this was not an issue.

I will say that for me the billet looks great with black fenders and if it were just a little darker gray I may have chose billet. Think about it and good luck with your decision.....in the meantime keep looking around town and you will see there are very few true blue models around.

First photo is fresh from the 4x4 shop with no cleaning and the other is just after a wash....

Love my billet! Hides dirt really good also.

Jlho1980 03-13-2013 07:19 AM

i actually purchased a Rubi unseen (had to be transported), the next morning i woke up and looked up the VIN, found out it had the saddle accents *yuck* i called the dealership immediately and told them i didnt want that and that id prefer the Billet...they came through and im happy i made the change. :-) GL on your decision.

I was going to get billet originally but mu buddy beat me to the punch by about 2 days. So I did true blue. Happy I did but still stare at his billet sometimes in jealousy. Attachment 222087Attachment 222088

I don't think you can go wrong with either one, but I like the billet more.

Funny you mention that.
I also started out with Commando Green. I had actually tried to order a Sport S in Commando Green but some summertime info was incorrect, and I could not get saddle cloth in a Sport. And while CG is nice (once you see it in person), I never got over it not being what I had expected.

I originally was not very interested in Billet. I figured it would be silver, and that was one of three colors (silver, black, and gecko) that I wanted nothing to do with what so ever. But once I saw it in person, I was amazed. Silver is not the right word for it... More like metallic smoke grey.

I took these pictures the first time I had seen Billet in person.

I was also lucky enough to find Bright Silver, Billet, and Tungsten all lined up.
http://www.wranglerforum.com/attachm...1&d=1348955184

Now I love the color with saddle leather interior.

Basically, you can't go wrong with either color....as long as you get saddle leather. :D

The True Blue is a bit too purple, IMHO. I'd really love them to have made an Indigo Blue and that would have made me step up to a new 2013 but the True Blue-Purple in person was turn off. If it's going to be a dark color with all the cleaning maintenance involved you've got to really love that dark color and any hesitation should make one forget it. The billet, though, looks great. I went with a used 2012 so I could get Bright Silver to match my GC.
